Build a Wee Lassie Canoe

The original Wee Lassie was a lapstrake-built open cedar canoe made in 1863 by J. Henry Rushton of Canton, NY. Rushton was one of the most famous canoe builders of his era. George Washington Sears, who wrote of his adventures under his pen name of Nessmuk as he recorded his paddling adventures throughout the Adirondacks, popularized these small, finely crafted canoes. Come spend 11 wonderful days with master instructor Larry Benjamin building your own Wee Lassie. You will be guided through every step of the building process. Leave with a beautiful, lightweight canoe that handles well in the water. Open to all level of student.

Twizzy: A Cotton Cord Basket

Adirondack Folk School 51 Main St., Lake Luzerne

Students will start with a base with pre-glued spokes. Triple twine with three colors of cotton cord in a stacking pattern, then twine with soft suede leather. The rim is accented with braided cotton cord and lashed with cotton cord. The instructor will bring all materials to make the basket. Students should wear comfortable clothing. Approximate dimensions are 5 ½" diameter x 2 ¼ - 2 7/8" H.

Carving the Greenman

Students will create a replica of Michelangelo's Florentine Greenman. This classic face has been seen throughout history in many forms. The leaves create or adorn the face. A fascinating project. Cutout blanks will be provided. Students can bring their own carving tools or buy available tools. Advance notice is required if tools are required. A basic kit will be available or recommended.
