SUMMARY:Make Some Books!
DESCRIPTION:This class is an introduction to some basic techniques for making books by hand. Participants will make 3 different book structures: a sewn pamphlet\, a hard cover fold book and an Asian style “stab” binding. The workshop will start with the making of decorative paste papers to be used for covering the book models we will make in class. Investigate the crafts employed in putting the elements of a book together. These simple bindings are satisfying and useful on their own but also employ techniques that can be elaborated on for more advanced book forms and personal exploration.

SUMMARY:Calligraphy with Turkey Quills
DESCRIPTION:First\, we will learn how to prepare walnut ink from the husks of local black walnuts. The black walnut tree (Juglans nigra) is one of North America’s most valuable and beautiful native trees. We will then learn how to temper and cut a turkey’s wing feather into a fine writing tool that we can use with the velvety smooth walnut ink to create calligraphy (beautiful writing!). For the calligraphy classes we will use a chisel-shaped felt pen and learn two letter styles – Gothic\, or blackletter\, and the Foundational Hand\, also using our black walnut ink. Other materials and uses will be demonstrated as well.

SUMMARY:Barn Quilt
DESCRIPTION:Barn quilts have become so popular over the past several years that there are barn quilt trails all over the country. We’ve even seen billboards on the NY thruway advertising a trail! These art projects are a great way to commemorate a special time in your life or an upcoming holiday. You might have such fun that you’ll want to make several like past students. During the class you’ll learn some of the history and then learn how to plot out your design after you have chosen one from the many designs on offer. There are so many patterns and the best part is you don’t need any quilting experience. Bring a friend and have some fun. Wear old clothes and bring a smock or apron\, students may wish to bring a hair dryer if they have one.

SUMMARY:Fairies of the Adirondacks
DESCRIPTION:Let the everyday slip away on this imaginative walk along the River Trail of the Adirondack Folk School. Drawing from Celtic lore\, we’ll weave a tale about Fairies\, while connecting the dots between the Faerie folk of Ireland and the Adirondacks. We’ll start with creating a house out of natural objects\, both provided and found\, for the Fairies of the Forest and end with sitting around the fire listening to the stories of the Fairy Tree Trail of Ardgillan Castle in Ireland\, the Cottingley Fairies of England\, and an Adirondack Poem or two on the Faerie realm. Enchanted tea and Fairy Bread will be served.
