SUMMARY:Stenciled Floorcloth
DESCRIPTION:Create your own floorcloth in either a traditional pattern or Arts & Crafts style using environmentally-safe water-based paints and finishes. The use of painted canvas floor coverings\, also known as oil cloths\, dates as far back as the 14th century in Europe. People coming to this country were looking for ways to reproduce some of the furnishings they were used to back home. Since resources were limited\, worn sails from ships provided them with a base to paint and cover their floors. Over time floorcloths proved themselves to be one of the most durable forms of floor covering used. Centuries old pieces still remain intact with the pattern clearly visible. Come create your own artful and durable floorcloth that will last for generations.

SUMMARY:Sharpening and Honing Blades
DESCRIPTION:Sharpening and honing of blades is a mystery to most people these days although our ancestors knew the skill intimately. Technology of honing has definitely improved over the past 100 years and there are many technologies to choose from. Howard will demystify the sharpening process and you will leave the workshop with the skills to sharpen your own blades. Students should bring one or two blades to hone for the class.

SUMMARY:Fairy Lore\, Houses and Gratitude Stakes
DESCRIPTION:Let the everyday slip away on this imaginative walk along the River Trail of the Adirondack Folk School. Drawing from Celtic lore\, we’ll weave a tale about Fairies\, while connecting the dots between the Faerie folk of Ireland and the Adirondacks. We’ll start with creating a house out of natural objects\, both provided and found\, for the Fairies of the Forest and end with sitting around the fire listening to the stories of the Fairy Tree Trail of Ardgillan Castle in Ireland\, the Cottingley Fairies of England\, and an Adirondack Poem or two on the Faerie realm. Enchanted tea and Fairy Bread will be served.

SUMMARY:Stenciled Floorcloth
DESCRIPTION:Create your own floorcloth in either a traditional pattern\, arts and crafts style or a game board pattern using environmentally safe water-based paints and finishes. You will learn to cut a stencil\, choose a pattern and the odors of your choice.  Several different techniques will be taught as well. The use of painted floor coverings or “Oyl cloths” dates to 14th century Europe. People coming to this country wanted to reproduce furnishings from back home. Since resources were limited\, worn sails from ships were painted and used to cover their floors. Floorcloths proved to be one of the most durable floorcoverings providing extra insulation on the floors of drafty homes. Create your own artful and durable floorcloth that will last for generations.

SUMMARY:How to Tell a Story
DESCRIPTION:Everyone has a story to tell – what matters is how you tell it. Whether you want to write the next great American novel or simply spin a good yarn around a campfire\, the elements of storytelling are the same. In this four-part\, weekly two-hour class\, students will focus on the basics of the “personal narrative” – a story told in first person that relates the story teller’s own experience. Students will develop a five-minute story (approximately 750 words) through in class exercises and take-home assignments. You will learn how to mine your memories for story ideas\, structure your thoughts for maximum effectiveness\, and find the details that will bring your story to life. At the end of the course\, participants will be given the opportunity to share their work in front of a small audience.
