SUMMARY:Drawing Timber Frame Plans
DESCRIPTION:Behind every timber frame stands a set of drawings – plans that turn an idea into a buildable structure. This 2.5-day weekend course gives you the skills to draft your own timber frame plans by hand\, using traditional methods that connect design directly to building. You’ll start with the basics of drafting: tools\, techniques\, and conventions for creating clear\, accurate plans. Then\, you’ll take your drawings off the page and practice the basic mortise and tenon joinery. This is an immersive class that blends drawing and some joinery practice. Expect guided lessons\, demonstrations\, and plenty of time both at the drafting board and using hand tools to cut the joinery. No prior experience is necessary for this course.

SUMMARY:T-Shirt Memory Quilt
DESCRIPTION:In this class students will learn how to cut and stabilize t-shirts to be used in a “memory” t-shirt quilt. Some editing of materials may be necessary. Guidance for fabric choices of sashing and background colors will be given. On day 2 students will lay out and size their blocks and begin sewing. Options for quilting will be discussed. On day 3 students will finish their quilts by applying the borders\, binding and label. Homework will be assigned between each class date. Students will need to bring their own t-shirt collection\, a rotary cutter and cutting mat for day 1. Materials for days 2 & 3 will be discussed during class. Some knowledge of sewing/quilting is helpful.

SUMMARY:Barn Quilt
DESCRIPTION:Barn quilts have become so popular over the past several years that there are barn quilt trails all over the country. We’ve even seen billboards on the NY thruway advertising a trail! These art projects are a great way to commemorate a special time in your life or an upcoming holiday. You might have such fun that you’ll want to make several like past students. During the class you’ll learn some of the history and then learn how to plot out your design after you have chosen one from the many designs on offer. There are so many patterns and the best part is you don’t need any quilting experience. Bring a friend and have some fun. Wear old clothes and bring a smock or apron\, students may wish to bring a hair dryer if they have one.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Chip Carving
DESCRIPTION:This course will introduce students to the traditional craft of chip carving – a type of woodcarving in which a small knife is used to incise decorative floral and geometric designs into basswood or butternut. The design is created by the removal of small pieces (chips) of the wood. Chip carving is an ancient\, traditional craft. Chip carved plates\, jewelry and keepsake boxes\, trays\, breadboards\, furniture and other items can make wonderful gifts and also decorate the home with traditional motifs. Some previous carving experience is helpful\, but not necessary. Students will learn to carve a variety of practice designs already drawn on a board and may complete a round ornament as well.

SUMMARY:Make Some Books!
DESCRIPTION:This class is an introduction to some basic techniques for making books by hand. Participants will make 3 different book structures: a sewn pamphlet\, a hard cover fold book and an Asian style “stab” binding. The workshop will start with the making of decorative paste papers to be used for covering the book models we will make in class. Investigate the crafts employed in putting the elements of a book together. These simple bindings are satisfying and useful on their own but also employ techniques that can be elaborated on for more advanced book forms and personal exploration.
