Bob Menard

Bob Menard began smithing in 1974 as part of a high school program in Vermont. Having been enraptured by the craft, he established his first shop on the family farm. Commerce was an early driver as he began marketing his meager skills right away. Fast forward to today, Bob currently operates a commercial blacksmithing and fabricating shop in Portland Maine, the Ball & Chain Forge. The customers for the work produced by this shop include private individuals, contractors, income property owners, designers, and artists. The product line is as varied as the number and types of clients.

Teaching plays a large role in his smithing career now. At this tender age, Bob finds he can’t give the knowledge and experience away fast enough. He has taught and demonstrated in both national and international events and schools.

Bob has been an active member for 35 years and the current president of the New England Blacksmiths after enjoying a long stint as the newsletter editor.
