Calligraphy with Turkey Quills- November 2024
Many of our "Founding Feathers" were indeed from turkeys! We will learn how to cut and letter with our own turkey quill pen using ink made from black walnut husks. Black Letter (Gothic) and Roman letter styles will be demonstrated and students will have an opportunity to practice using simple homemade markers.

Chair Caning- September 2024
Spend a few days learning how to cane your own chair during which you'll learn how to weave the traditional 7-step caning pattern. Bring along a chair in good condition in need of a new caned seat. Ideally, the chair seat will be square or rectangular in shape and have fewer than 85 holes drilled into the seat frame. Any repairs and refinishing should be completed before the class begins. Please bring a chair in sound condition, with the old cane removed, if possible.

Chip Carved Peace Board- November 2024
Alex is known in the woodland indian culture and historical programs for making all of his own traditional attire, including moccasins, and will instruct the class in the art of traditional eastern woodland Indian moccasin making. With his instruction, each student will make their own pair of center seam-pucker toe leather moccasins; these were the most common among the eastern woodland tribes. Students will be using deer hide leather and awls to make primitive, traditional eastern woodland moccasins.

Decorative Gourd Table Lamp- August 2024
This course teaches participants how to make a natural Gourd Table Lamp. During the introduction, numerous examples of raw and finished gourds will be shown and cleaning/preparing both interior and exterior surfaces will be covered in detail. The first part of the class will be devoted to preparation as well as planning and sketching your imagery. Various tools and materials will be used including scouring pads, scrapers, sanding materials and more. First, the outside surface is rigorously cleaned. After a hole is drilled at the bottom for the lamp hardware, the inside is scraped, cleaned and painted. Participants will then make a rough sketch on white paper. Numerous reference examples and art techniques will be discussed and shown. Gourds are decorated using permanent paint and markers. Small holes are drilled at random or as part of the design, using Dremel tool or electric drill. Finally, gourds are given several fine coats of Polyurethane and hardware is added.

How to Tell a Story Part 2- August 2024
This course explores the three-act story structure in greater detail and focuses on how to turn a short personal narrative or another story idea into a full-length screenplay/play, novel, or memoir. In this four week class, students with learn the techniques necessary to create multi- dimensional characters, develop a compelling plot, and identify the themes that will tie the elements of their story together. Students will leave with the tools they need to begin a first draft or revise an existing one. Course Prerequisite: How to Tell a Story Pt. 1 or instructor permission.
