Dick Sargent: Master Blacksmith Extraordinaire

With a career spanning over five decades, Dick Sargent has not only mastered the art of blacksmithing but has also become a revered educator in the field. Since establishing his own forge in 1973, Dick’s expertise has centered around high-end architectural work and reproduction hardware.

Dick began his blacksmithing journey in 1971 at Old Sturbridge Village, where he apprenticed under Frank Grapes. In 1974, he partnered with Tony Millham at Star Forge in Newport, Rhode Island, where they produced reproduction house hardware for over fifty homes for the Newport Restoration Foundation. After leaving Rhode Island, he returned to Vermont and founded Hartland Forge, selling reproduction hardware through a self-published mail-order catalog.

In the early 2000s, Dick moved to New Jersey to become the Department Head of the blacksmithing studio, managing the smithing education program for a decade. Now semi-retired, Dick dedicates his time to researching period ironwork. His extensive career is filled with numerous accomplishments and contributions to the blacksmithing community that are too vast to enumerate here.
