Larry Benjamin

Larry Benjamin is a distinguished woodworker and educator renowned for his expertise in crafting unique, organically inspired furniture and wooden canoes. Based in Pennsylvania, Larry’s journey into woodworking began after a successful career as a product developer and teacher in the technology sector. Seeking a more tangible and hands-on form of expression, he transitioned into woodworking, viewing furniture both as art and intricate puzzles. Influenced by woodworking legends like George Nakashima and Sam Maloof, Larry developed a profound appreciation for the natural beauty of wood and the stories each tree embodies. He believes that starting with a beautiful piece of wood and preserving its inherent magnificence is the essence of his craft.

As an esteemed instructor at the Adirondack Folk School, Larry has imparted his knowledge to numerous students, guiding them through the creation of their own furniture and wooden canoes. His teaching repertoire includes courses such as building the Wee Lassie Canoe, a lightweight and elegantly designed boat that traces its origins back to 1863. In these comprehensive 11-day workshops, Larry leads students through each step of the building process, ensuring they leave with a beautiful, functional canoe.

In addition to canoe building, Larry teaches the construction of the Sagamore Chair, a design inspired by the historic Sagamore Hotel on Lake George. This chair is celebrated for its graceful forms and comfort, and under Larry’s guidance, students learn techniques such as steam bending local Adirondack Red Oak and laminating frame elements. These classes are accessible to all skill levels, reflecting Larry’s commitment to making woodworking approachable and rewarding. Larry’s dedication to his craft and teaching has been highlighted in various media outlets. For instance, Spectrum Local News featured his passion for building canoes and sharing that enthusiasm with others, showcasing his impact on students and the broader woodworking community.

Through his work, Larry Benjamin continues to inspire and educate, fostering a deep appreciation for the art of woodworking and the rich narratives embedded within each piece of wood.
