Basketry

The Adirondack Pack Basket is one of the most recognized objects associated with the Adirondacks. These versatile baskets were used to carry just about everything the guides, hunters and trappers took with them into the woods. Create your own pack basket patterned from the traditional Adirondack Pack Baskets. The Sightseer pack is a great size for teens or adults. The first day students weave a plain weave base with the pre-cut spokes and then weave the sides. Linda will be guiding students as they concentrate on shape, creating a belly while learning to continuous weave. The main weaving will be done the first day. The baskets will sit and dry overnight. On the second day, students will pack the baskets tight, level the top, weave a false rim, cut, and tuck spokes, insert a handle, and fit the rim to the basket and lash the rim. Lastly, students will add an adjustable webbing or leather harness secured with skids. Linda will guide you and teach you many tips and techniques. Students will be using a drawknife and other sharp tools. Instructor will bring all materials to make the basket. Baskets will not be stained during class. Dimensions are 8 ½” x 11″ x 16″ high.

Special Notes: Materials fee for Webbing Harness – $125. Materials fee for Leather Harness – $170. Leather harness is dark brown. Webbing harness color choices may vary depending on what is available at the time of the class. Please call AFS if you would like the leather harness as it needs to be ordered a minimum of two weeks prior to the class. Students should wear comfortable clothing.

This basket was designed exclusively for the Beekman Mercantile in Sharon Springs, NY. It features a large 12″ x 7″ solid bottom Shaker Cathead that, when inverted, forms the cover for this pie carrier. The base is a 13″ breadboard that will be provided. The instructor designed the component parts of the carrier to be used on a daily basis. The basket is for bread and fruit and the bread board is for cutting and/or serving. You need only store the handle (provided) and strap until ready to use as a pie or cake carrier. Students will weave the solid bottom base using a Shaker technique. The basket will then be pinned to a mold (provided) for weaving using a chase weave technique. Students will also learn to rivet leather to assemble the straps. The handle assembly will be provided. The finished size of the basket is 13″ x 8″ (without handle).

Make a statement with this decorative basket tray. Using a twill design of over 2 under 2 on the base and sides can be a little challenge at first, then moves on quickly with great results. Class will be using dyed and natural colored reed; some different choices will be available. Basket weavers of all levels are welcome, but some basket experience is helpful. Dimensions: 9″ wide x 15″ long x 2 ½” high.

Students will start with a base with pre-glued spokes. Triple twine with three colors of cotton cord in a stacking pattern, then twine with soft suede leather. The rim is accented with braided cotton cord and lashed with cotton cord. The instructor will bring all materials to make the basket. Students should wear comfortable clothing. Approximate dimensions are 5 ½” diameter x 2 ¼ – 2 7/8″ H.

The hearts are woven from hardwood maple splint and are hung from hand-dyed silk ribbon in various colors. Students will weave two large and two smaller hearts. These hearts can be filled with small items. Additional kits will be available for sale.
