A Taste of the Forge II- September 2024
If you’ve taken Taste of the Forge or another basic blacksmithing class at AFS, then you’re ready for Taste of the Forge II! This class, taught by blacksmith Steve Gurzler, builds on the students’ prior experience to bring them to the next level, pursuing more advanced skills. Like in Taste of the Forge, we will follow the Artist Blacksmiths Association of North America (ABANA) curriculum in a small class format. Students can expect to create 2 or more useful or decorative objects over the course of 3 weekday evenings.

A Taste of the Forge- May 2024
Would you like to try blacksmithing, and get a taste of the craft? Join instructor Steve Gurzler for 3 weekday evenings to learn how to operate a coal forge to bring metal to incandescent heat and shape it with hammer in hand. This class will use the Artist Blacksmiths Association of North America (ABANA) curriculum to teach the basics of blacksmithing. Students can expect to create 2 or more projects during the 3 evenings. Class size is limited to ensure all can advance at their own pace.

Blacksmithing 105: Forging a Gate Latch- July 2024
In this class, students with a basic class or a bit of experience behind them will learn to forge hooks and eyes, make a basic forge-weld, and create an attractive, functional Gate Latch. ABANA

Blacksmithing 107: Make a Forged Leaf Key Ring- September 2024
This 4 hour class is ideal for the beginner blacksmith with little to no experience. We’ll explore basic techniques first, then move on to forging leaves to create a decorative leaf keychain. ABANA

Blacksmithing 117: Forge Welding Basics, Fire Poker & Chain Links- October 2024
This course is designed for students who have completed a basic class or who have equivalent experience. We will cover the basics of forge-welding, learn to forge weld a loop on a bar, then will move on to forging a short length of chain. ABANA

Blacksmithing: Bottle Opener- May 2024
This class follows the lessons learned in Blacksmithing 101. Students will learn how to punch and drift to make a usable bottle opener.

Blacksmithing: Coat Rack- April 2024
This final intro to blacksmithing class uses all of the forging techniques taught in the previous classes to create a small coat or pot rack, with hand forged hooks riveted to the base. This is also an introduction to joinery, as students will learn how to rivet pieces together. Other techniques including pass-throughs and mortise and tenon will be demonstrated and discussed.

Blacksmithing: Nail & Hook- May 2024
This 4-hour class is ideal for the beginner blacksmith with little to no experience. We will start with the basics, and within the first hour students will be forging their own nails. From there, students will forge hooks with a decorative twist.

Camper’s Frying Pan- June 2024
In this class students will learn basic sheet metal forging and riveting while creating a small camper’s frying pan. We’ll start with a disk of heavy-gauge sheet metal and forge a frying pan suitable for campfire or stove top use with a decorative forged handle. This class is recommended for students who have taken a basic course or who have some blacksmithing experience. Quality hearing protection is recommended, along with leather gloves.

Claw Hammer- April 2024
This two-day class will take participants through the entire process of making their own claw hammer. Punching, forging the hammer to shape, heat treating, and mounting it on a handle. Participants will work together in striking teams of two.

You’ll learn fire management, hammering methods, drawing out, upsetting, cutting, splitting, twisting, and convenience bending along with a demo of forge welding. Make punches and chisels and learn to harden and temper them. Heating material and heat management will be taught and much more.
