Evening Programs & Workshops

Author Marty Podskoch will give a Power Point presentation on the new edition of his book, The Adirondack Fire Towers: Their History and Lore, The Southern Districts. He will highlight the fire tower restoration work that has been done in the Adirondacks and discuss the history of the fire towers in the Southern Adirondacks.

During the late 19th and 20th centuries, fires rages out of control in many of New York State's vast wooded areas. The years 1903 and 1908 were particularly disastrous, and because of public outcry for protection from the devastation, the state began a rigorous fire prevention and control program, including the building of fire towers.

Join Marty at AFS as he discusses the vast history of these iconic Adirondack fixtures.

"The Wonders of Woodlands in Story and Song" will celebrate green and growing things, critters, and feathered friends. It will be a time to appreciate the enchantment of the forest through folktales and true tales. The music draws from the folk music tradition as well as art songs and more contemporary music all of which remind us how intertwined our lives are with Nature's gifts. This program features storyteller/singer Eileen Egan Mack and pianist Michael Clement.

Visible mending is an ornamental way to repair torn, snagged, or even stained clothing or other textiles. Students are encouraged to bring a garment to repair, but can also practice on fabric in class!
