Many handwoven patterns look best with traditional hemstitching completed on the loom at the start and finish of your project. Four styles of hemstitching will be demonstrated and practiced. Handouts will be provided to help you use the hemstitching techniques on future projects. Hemstitching can be used on both floor looms and rigid heddle looms.

Wool is a versatile ecological material for knitting, felting, and weaving, but processing it can be a bit tricky for a beginner. In this workshop, you will learn how to work with wool starting with raw fleece straight off the sheep and ending with handspun yarn ready to be incorporated into your craft projects. If you have your own raw wool that you want to process or tools that you want to try out, please bring them! We will play with wool from a variety of sheep breeds, including some rare heritage breeds, and we?ll learn how to use their different qualities to create the perfect materials for your projects. You will learn how to use different wool processing tools like hand cards, wool combs, and a drum carder. If you like starting with natural materials and seeing them through to the finished product, this is a great workshop for you!

Participants will dye a range of natural colors using plants found locally in the Adirondack region. We'll talk about fiber selection and preparation, dyeing techniques, and how to sustainably gather plant materials for natural dyeing. This is a great foundation for future natural dye classes. Beginners will get a strong foundation in the fundamentals of natural dyeing, while participants with some experience with dye will gain a deeper experience with local materials. Participants have the option to select quilting cotton, DK weight wool yarn, or cotton mending thread. No experience necessary.

This weave structure creates a light and airy scarf that is perfect for late spring evenings through the early fall crisp days. It is also a wonderful four-season accessory to add color to your outfits. You will complete a 54" scarf with fringe.

Print the peak color of the Adirondacks onto a cozy wrap using locally abundant native and invasive plants. Ecoprinting is a natural dyeing technique that creates beautiful botanical prints on fabric from fresh or dried plants. Participants will create a unique wearable art piece and we?ll discuss preparing fabric for dye, sustainable foraging, and how to create clear, crisp images of plants on textiles.
