    Learn the discipline of Metal Working known as Embossing. Students will transfer an image of their choosing from a paper template to a sheet of copper by using various sizes of stylus and other hand tools to create a textured picture. Students will find that copper is a very workable material. Your finished piece will fit in with any Adirondack decor or even in a rustic birch frame! This piece is 8" x 8?.

  • Braided Rim Basket

    This tabletop basket is woven in the plain weave method and has a solid bottom. It incorporates a "chain weave", woven with dyed round reed in a choice of colors. The basket is finished with a braided and scalloped rim, woven with matching dyed reed. A choice of a ceramic accent embellishes the basket in coordinating colors.

Sheila will guide participants through each step — while explaining how small changes can create big differences in the final cheese.   • Introduction to Woodburning

    You don't have to be an artist to create wood burned art. This introduction to wood burning, also known as pyrography, will teach you how to create your own unique artwork. We will cover all the basics: safety, burners, tips, transferring images, wood species, adding color and protective finishes. Resources will also be shared for continued learning after class completion. In class, students will try out various tips to see what each is capable of. Students will then have the opportunity to work on up to three projects of nature or Adirondack inspired images.

  • Scroll Saw Christmas Ornaments

    There's nothing like the beauty of the winter season in the Adirondacks! Make a holiday ornament for yourself or your loved ones. Over the course of this day students will progress from making a simple wooden Christmas ornament to one requiring the skills you will have achieved during the day. The course will include instruction on the safe use of the power scroll saw, pattern transfer, the cutting of multiple ornaments using the stacking process and the process of making interior cuts in a piece of wood using a scroll saw. Appropriate for beginning woodworkers and those with some experience.

  • Weaving Splint Seats

    Chairs with four intact rails can accept several different types of woven seats, including splint seats. In this class you'll learn to weave a herringbone pattern using flat reed. Please bring a chair that is in sound condition with the old seat removed. Any refinishing you wish to do should be completed prior to the class. Should your chair not be in sound condition, a limited number will be available for a nominal fee. Materials and tools provided.

  • Start with a Nine Patch

    You will start with strips and create a 9-Patch square. With a few cuts and twists you will create a new block. Several block designs will be demonstrated. The fun begins when we see the variety of blocks created with different colors and twists.

Participants will leave with a working knowledge of dulcimer making, and a handcrafted instrument ready for a lifetime of making music.

  • UFO Studio

    AFS UFO Studio, formerly known as Sewing Circle, is an out of this world opportunity for fiber artists to come and complete the UnFinished Objects floating around their home. UFO Studio is free to attend, and though it is non-instructional, peer-to-peer help is always available. All forms of projects are welcome ? bring your unfinished weaving, sewing, embroidery, rug hooking, knitting, crocheting, felting, or any other project that involves fiber handwork. AFS has a couple of sewing machines, small looms, and hand tools available but please feel free to bring your own!
