The use of plants for wellness, nutrition and balance has been practiced for thousands of years in the Adirondacks and cultures around the globe. Join Margo for an exploration of Basic Principles of Herbal Medicine through the lens of intimately getting to know 6 easy to identify plants from our local region who may be growing right under your own feet! (And in your own garden!)
In this class you will have an opportunity to gain intimate knowledge of plants and traditional methods of working with them, while building your wild skill set in identification and transforming raw (plant) material into beneficial preparations through hands-on experiences. Your work in the classroom will continue at home. In each class you will receive a rooted specimen of the plant we work with, along with the earthwork of establishing your own medicinal herb garden.
This class is recommended for those who are: curious, herbalists, gardeners and/or plant lovers, ages 13 and up, beginner or experienced.

Herbal Infused Vinegar

Adirondack Folk School 51 Main St., Lake Luzerne, NY

Herbal infused vinegar is easy to make and wonderful to take! Learn how adding just a few simple, fresh ingredients can enhance the scientifically proven curative power of apple cider vinegar. As we chop, we'll discuss the variety of internal and external applications, the many benefits of apple cider vinegar itself and the added value of combining it with the curative plants found in "Herbs de Provence". During the July offering, you will have the opportunity to make avariety of herbal infused vinegars based on the recipe which originated in the Provence region of southern France. Created with your desired focus on wellness and immune system support throughout the year. In the October offering, learn to make Margo's tried and true "must make" Fire Cider Vinegar formula for Immune system support, and increasing circulation and heat during cold weather imbalances.

Sacred Union of Plant & Water

Adirondack Folk School 51 Main St., Lake Luzerne, NY

Take a "trip in a cup" as we journey to India, via the principles behind teh Sacred Union of Plant and Water and the areomatic herbs and spices used to creat India's beverage of choice: Chai. We'll start thsi touch, smell, feel and taste workshop by breaking down and discussing the plant ingredients in Chai, their beneficial effects on the body and why it's such a perfect beverage for North Country living. Then we'll put our knowledge to work as we peel, chop and grind our way to creating a traditional Chai infusion from scratch. Once ready, we'll sip our Sacred Union and discuss the many differences between tea and plant infusions and the role they can play in your life. This class is a delightful journey for the senses and also includes a hands-on component where we will make and enjoy Chai tea! Class will also include an opportunity to make your own custom blend of Chai ingredients to replicate the process at home.

Herbal Electuaries and Truffles

Satisfy your sweet tooth while nourishing your body with Herbal Electuaries and Truffles! People have been getting nourishment from plants since the beginning of time. Discover the delight of combining simple pantry ingredients with wild crafted herbs to make candies that are both delicious and nutritious. We'll discuss the health benefits of each of our ingredients, including chocolate, and then the aprons will go on! Participants will go home with a lovely batch of Herbal Electuaries and two types of herbal truffles, each decorated with your choice of toppings.

Sacred Union of Plant & Water

Take a "trip in a cup" as we explore cultures from around the world and their tea rituals where a Sacred Union is made between plant and water. We'll start this touch, smell, feel and taste workshop with a walk outdoors to identify and harvest plants. Then we'll come into the classroom for a hands-on infusion making experience. As we sip the prepared infusions, we'll discuss the many roles which tea and plant infusions have played throughout history, their differences, and the benefits of inviting them into your life. This class is a delightful journey for the senses and includes a hands-on component where we will make, and enjoy, an herbal chai tea!

Walk on the Wild Side – Introduction to Foraging

The plants are whispering…beckoning us to gather “in the wild.” This class is for those who would like to answer that call. To work with the plants at their peak in the location in which they thrive! Using techniques from various earth-based traditions, discover the many benefits of wild foraging including: approaching the plants with an open and receptive heart, working intuitively, setting intentions for the exchange, asking permission as a way of giving respect, giving thanks, wild plant identification, and making herbal preparations on the spot!

Traditional Herbalism

Discover what they knew and passed down for generations. In this course you'll get hands-on experience in traditional practices for transforming raw plant material into beneficial preparations with a focus on enhancing the wellbeing of our body system organs. This class is for all levels and open to ages 13 and up.

Creating a Medicine Wheel Herb Garden

There are many gardentemplates one can install, yet
none are as Earth focused,
Spiritual, and meditative as a
traditional Medicine Wheel
Garden. We’ll discuss the
basic structural elements
which create this unique
garden design and, from
there, sketch one out on paper
- influenced by our own
connection with the Earth. With the basic principles planted in
our hearts and minds, we will create and plant a permanent
Medicine Wheel Garden garden for all at AFS to enjoy!
