In this couples class, one person will create a copper embossed plaque on 5 mill copper with Metal Arts instructor Mark Swanberry. Various templates for your design will be available or you may use your own, if applicable. Downstairs in the Woodshop, the other person will be making an Adirondack style frame with Rustic Furniture instructor Jim Schreiner, which will be built on a 12 inch by 12 inch pine backing. At the end of the classes the copper plaque will be fastened to the pine framework

When is the last time you tried something for the first time? If you?ve wanted to try your hand at one of the many crafts offered at AFS but you couldn?t decide what to try, this program is for you! This summer we are offering a four-day program for students ages 16+ that explores a new core craft each day including basketry, blacksmithing, weaving, and woodworking. Students will learn a new skill and create a new project every day! Please note: No a la carte registration for single day courses. Lodging and food is not provided. Day 1: Gathering Basket with Barbara Boughton This basket is woven on a pre-stained round oak base and employs continuous chase weave to build the sides. You will learn how to determine the number of spokes needed for continuous weave and watch your basket grow with two weavers. You will make your own leather handles which incorporate into the rim. Woven on a 6? base, this functional basket grows into a 12? diameter basket with 10? sides.
Day 2: Woven Towels with Janet Gallant One loom, one warp, so many possibilities! The looms are warped with a natural color and several towels can be woven on the loom. Several weaving patterns and design options will be demonstrated. Select your favorite pattern and colors and you'll be on your way to a few hand woven towels to keep or to share.
Day 3: Forged Leaf Keychain with Arnie Barsky This class is ideal for the beginner blacksmith with little to no experience. We'll explore basic techniques first then move on to forging leaves to create a decorative leaf keychain. Long pants (no nylon clothing) and closed-toe shoes are required. Leather gloves, eye and ear protection are provided; you may wish to bring your own for fit and comfort
Day 4: Wooden Keepsake Box with Larry Benjamin Using a walnut frame and specimen wood, you will create a gorgeous and distinctive piece for keeping your personal treasures safe. Woodworking techniques such as cutting, sanding and creating finger joints will be covered.

Follow the story of wheat from field to feast! In this immersive, seasonal program, you'll experience traditional farming and food-making skills step by step - right down to a fresh, handmade pizza created from your own flour. In April Instructor Martin Macica will introduce you to Annie, his gentle plow donkey, who will help us prepare a plot of land on the AFS campus for planting wheat seeds the old fashioned way. In May, Instructor Patricia Goldberg will teach you how to plant a pizza garden in raised beds, choosing herbs and vegetables that will later top your pizza. Return to the field in August with Martin to harvest your wheat and learn how to bundle and store it for drying. Finally, in September start your day with Martin, who will teach you how to thresh your wheat and grind it into flour. Then meet Instructor David Riihimaki, our pizza maker extraordinaire, who will guide you through mixing, kneading, and shaping your pizza dough from your freshly milled flour. Add your garden toppings, some local cheese and watch it bake in our wood-fired oven. Then enjoy your farm-to-table pizza feast together!

Day 1: Double Bottomed Bushel Basket with Barbara Boughton This basket is ideal for a beginner or someone who would like to learn additional techniques. Students will weave a sturdy, functional basket beginning with a kicked-up twined base. In weaving up the sides, multiple weaving techniques will be introduced. Students are encouraged to work with the instructor to design their own basket, applying embellishment and color consideration. Hand-dyed materials will be available to weave into the baskets. The basket is finished with a pair of leather handle. Students will leave with an understanding of multiple weaving techniques, and a unique piece of work. Dimensions: approx. 10" diameter, 8" high.

Day 4: Woodturning Pens with Frank Lagace In this beginner friendly class, you will learn the basics of wood lathe operation and safety while turning a piece of raw wood into a custom pen. Each student will leave with a beautiful, handcrafted pen and the knowledge to continue woodturning confidently on their own.
