In this class you will learn the basics of creating spindle-based objects. Then you will use your new-found skills to create a candlestick and a wooden pen. Winter Landscapes & Waterways Photography Tour

Winter weather, snow and ice offer a wonderful diversity of moods for outdoor photography. Ice forms into an endless variety of shapes and patterns along lake shorelines, streams, and rivers that can be enhanced with a soft covering of snow. Snowflakes and ice provide great options for macro photography. With sunset at 5:30pm, we'll be working with golden hour light in addition to sunset color and afterglow possibilities. Spend a day photographing the beautiful winter landscapes in the southeastern Adirondacks with Carl Heilman as your guide and mentor. After meeting briefly at the Folk School for an introduction and to cover any initial questions, the rest of the day will be spent photographing at several nearby locations. There are many beautiful winter vistas within a half hour of the Folk School to take best advantage of the dramatic winter landscape. This nature photography tour is designed for those who are already comfortable with camera basics such as the relationship between aperture, shutter and ISO settings.

Beginning Bluegrass Banjo

Bluegrass banjo is the familiar sound that drove such favorites as the Beverly Hillbillies Theme Song, Rocky Top and Foggy Mountain Breakdown. In this class you will learn enough about the banjo so that you can use a variety of available instructional aids from your home and progress with learning Bluegrass banjo at your own pace. You will be exposed to the basics of playing 5-string Bluegrass banjo, including tunings, left hand chord shapes, right hand rolls, vamping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, chokes, chimes and how to read tablatures. We'll also look at online sites about banjo practice and instruction. Bring a playable 5-string banjo, two metal finger picks and a thumb pick. Although there will be several handouts, an audio recorder is a good idea.

Scroll Saw Puzzle Making

Wooden puzzles are a great project whether you are a beginner or experienced woodworker. In this class students will learn the basics of the safe operation of a scroll saw, proper blade selection and installation, pattern transfer, proper cutting techniques and proper body positioning at the saw table. Each student will progress from learning to make moderate curves to tight curves using the scroll saw by producing, first, a wood maple leaf and progressing through more difficult patterns to a final puzzle which will require attention to detail and care in cutting. Come learn the secret tricks to ensure your puzzle is a success. It can make the perfect gift, too.

Hiker (Small) Adirondack Pack Basket by Linda Scherz

The Adirondack Pack Basket is one of the most recognized objects associated with the Adirondacks. This will be a day of weaving ending with a great pack ready for your day hike or canoe trip. Create your own pack basket patterned from the traditional Adirondack Pack Baskets. Adults and children can wear this pack.
Students will weave a plain weave base with the pre-cut spokes. Then learn to continuous weave the sides of the basket, pack tight, level the top, weave a false rim, cut and tuck, insert the wood handle, fit the rim and lash on basket. Lastly, add an adjustable webbing or leather harness secured with skids. This class will be fun for all weavers. This is a great intro size pack to making pack baskets. Linda will demonstrate, teach you weaving techniques and guide you while you weave your basket. Students will be using a drawknife and other sharp tools.

Instructor will bring all materials to make the basket. Baskets will not be stained during class. Dimensions are 6" x 9" x 14" high.

Silver Metal Clay Exploration

Explore the many ways that you can use silver in a metal clay formulation to create jewelry designs of your own. The newest way of working with silver is metal clay which can be shaped like clay to produce uniquely textured surfaces, resulting in durable beautiful silver jewelry. Students will learn metal clay working techniques and make pendants, earrings, charms and rings. Fresh leaves will also be used to create a silver piece of nature. The class will also cover techniques for setting and firing stones directly in metal clay. Each student will leave with at least four finished pieces of jewelry. No previous experience necessary.

Winter Weaving – Chenille Scarf

Want to try out weaving on a floor loom? This class starts with a loom all set up and ready to go - no prior weaving experience is needed! Keep the winter chill away with a scarf you weave yourself. Each class will include an introduction to the loom and instruction on how to operate it. Several color choices will be available. You'll be weaving away in no time!

We'll discuss the health benefits of each of our ingredients, including chocolate, and then the aprons will go on! Participants will go home with a lovely batch of Herbal Electuaries and two types of herbal truffles, each decorated with your choice of toppings.
