• Create Your Own Hardwood Cutting Board

    Come create a beautiful 12"-18" hardwood cutting board during two, half-day sessions. The class will discuss the types of wood being used, such as sapele, purple heart, African cherry and hard maple. The wood will be cut to size on a table saw. Then, using a joiner, students will make sure all pieces are the same size before gluing the various pieces together and allowing them to dry overnight. On the second day, the class will use planers to ensure that all boards are level and the same thickness. Students will then use a router to create a well and handles. Finally, the boards will be sanded.

  • Rug Hooking: Moon Over the Mountain

    Join us for an introduction to the art of traditional rug hooking with this 8” x 16” scene. This class is suitable for beginners, but a little more challenging than the Quail Rug Hooking class due to color value decisions the rug hooker must make. In this one-day class, you’ll learn the basics of this timeless textile craft. All materials-including backing, wool strips, hook and frame-will be provided, and no prior experience is necessary. Colors may vary. Class registration closes one month before the class in order to leave time to prepare materials.

  • Saori Scarf Weaving

    Saori Weaving is a freestyle form of weaving. The colors and textures of the yearn are the star of this scarf. In this class you will learn to weave plain weave and a technique known as clasp weft weaving. Hand spun smooth and textured yarns created by the instructor will be included in the class materials. You will complete a 54? scarf with fringe. If you have yarn in your personal stash you are welcome to bring it along to add to your scarf.

  • Balsam Fir Pillow Trees

    In this class we'll be stitching aromatic balsam pillows in the shape of evergreen trees. Using balsam fir needles, plaids, and glass beads, we'll create three different pillows inspired by the raised beadwork of the Tuscarora people and the rich history of balsam fir use in the Adirondacks. These are great for use in a dresser, car, or anywhere would enjoy the fragrance! Pillows are approximately 5" in height. No prior experience or sewing machine required.

  • Holiday Ornament Pyrography

    Kick off your holiday season by learning a new craft. You will select from a variety of holiday and winter inspired images to create one or two pieces that can be used for coasters, decorating or gifting. This abbreviated introduction to wood burning, also known as pyrography, will introduce you to wood burning tools, tips, transferring images, shading and adding color.

  • Woven Hanging Hearts

    Spend the morning crafting these lovely hanging hearts, sure to brighten your holiday decor or perfect for gift giving. The hearts are woven from hardwood maple splint and are hung from hand-dyed silk ribbons in various colors. Students will weave two large and two smaller hearts. Additional kits will be available for sale.

  • Hanging Hardwood Splint Snowflake

    Students will weave these striking snowflakes from hardwood maple and cherry wood splint. Several patterns may be woven, depending on the chosen splint. Students will weave one large 10" diameter snowflake, and two smaller 7" snowflakes, which make a beautiful grouping hung together on a tree or in a window. Additional kits will be available for sale.

  • UFO Studio

    AFS UFO Studio, formerly known as Sewing Circle, is an out of this world opportunity for fiber artists to come and complete the UnFinished Objects floating around their home. UFO Studio is free to attend, and though it is non-instructional, peer-to-peer help is always available. All forms of projects are welcome ? bring your unfinished weaving, sewing, embroidery, rug hooking, knitting, crocheting, felting, or any other project that involves fiber handwork. AFS has a couple of sewing machines, small looms, and hand tools available but please feel free to bring your own!

  • Hardwood Spoon Carving

    In this class students will design, shape and carve a serving spoon. Skills explored include: making a template and transferring it to a blank, carving and shaping the bowl and back of the spoon, use of hand tools such as gouges, scrapers, coping saws, and spokeshaves, and sanding and finishing techniques. Students will leave class with a beautiful, handcrafted hardwood spoon to use in their own kitchens or to give as a gift!

  • Nuno Felt Scarf

    Join Marjolaine in this 1-day class to create a nuno felt scarf you can wear different ways and close with a button. During this workshop you will explore the technique of nuno felt, a wet felting process combining silk fabric and wool roving. The felting is accomplished by applying water, soap, and friction. In this class you will: create a lightweight scarf made with silk fabric and merino wool roving, discover various wool layouts, create a stained-glass effect, and paint with silk hankies and silk roving on wool.
