Saori Scarf Weaving

Saori Weaving is a freestyle form of weaving. A weaving technique known as clasp weft will be used. The selection of yarns and color is the main attraction with this scarf, which will be completed with twisted fringe. The looms will be warped and ready to go. Hand spun art yarn created by the instructor is included in the material cost, as well as a selection of commercially spun yarn to balance the structure. If you knit or crochet there's a chance you have a stash of yarn that isn't enough for a project than you just can't part with. Bring it along to use or add to the collection of choices. This is a perfect stash busting project! The summer session will use yarns suitable for warmer weather.

Shaker Cathead Basket

Adirondack Folk School 51 Main St., Lake Luzerne, NY, United States

The Shaker Community, founded in New York, is known for their design aesthetic, combining form and function in simply elegant ways. This class introduces students to the Cathead base, a Shaker classic. In this form, a small, square-base, grows into a round basket, at the diameter and height of the student’s choosing. This particular technique of weaving corners, produces four “feet” upon which the basket rests. This creates a raised base on the inside of the basket, allowing its contents to first fill the perimeter of the basket, and then the center. Disbursing the weight of the basket contents, first to the perimeter, serves to prevent produce from becoming bruised, and protects the center of the basket from wearing out. Students will weave a two-by-two twill pattern for both the base and the sides of the basket.

Glorified Nine Patch

Adirondack Folk School 51 Main St., Lake Luzerne, NY, United States

This block will include sewing curves. The Acuquilt system includes match points in each piece that eases the challenge. You will create enough blocks for a table top or a lap quilt project of your choosing. The blocks created in the block party classes will be cut using the Acuquilt cutting system. This system improves accuracy in cutting and reduces the stress on your hands often felt while cutting large amounts of small units of fabric for the quilt blocks.

Block, Shoulder or Molding Plane

Open a new chapter in your wood working journey by making your own hand tool. Students will be able to make a block plane, shoulder plane or molding plane. Shape the wood body, harden and temper steel for the blade and make your first shavings all in one day!

With Shaker inspired elegance these are sure to become instant heirlooms!

You will be exposed to the basics of playing 5-string Bluegrass banjo, including tunings, left hand chord shapes, right hand rolls, vamping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, chokes, chimes and how to read tablatures. Basic Shaker Oval Boxes

One of the most iconic items of Shaker woodworking, nesting oval boxes share elegance, simplicity and functionality equally. Using carefully prepared thin strips of wood each participant will carve the "swallowtails" of "fingers" on one end before soaking them in a hot water bath to soften for bending. Copper tacks are installed to hold the oval hoop together before top and bottom boards are fit and held by wooden pegs. Each student will construct five nesting oval boxes from cherry wood in this two-day workshop. This class is open to all experience levels, no woodworking experience required!
