A Taste of the Forge- May 2026

Join instructor Steve Gurzler for 3 weekday evenings to learn how to operate a coal forge to bring metal to incandescent heat and shape it with hammer in hand. This class will use the Artist Blacksmiths Association of North America (ABANA) curriculum to teach the basics of blacksmithing. Students can expect to create 2 or more projects during the 3 evenings. Class size is limited to ensure all can advance at their own pace. Students should be high school age or older. ADK Wildlife Rehabilitation- September 2026

AFS Craft Sampler- August 2026
$555.00 – $645.00Price range: $555.00 through $645.00When is the last time you tried something for the first time? If you've wanted to try your hand at one of the many crafts offered at AFS but you couldn't decide what to try, this program is for you! This summer we are offering a four-day program for students ages 16+ that explores a new core craft each day including basketry, blacksmithing, weaving, and woodworking. Students will learn a new skill and create a new project every day! Please note: No a la carte registration for single day courses. Lodging and food is not provided.
Day 1: Double Bottomed Bushel Basket with Barbara Boughton This basket is ideal for a beginner or someone who would like to learn additional techniques. Students will weave a sturdy, functional basket beginning with a kicked-up twined base. In weaving up the sides, multiple weaving techniques will be introduced. Students are encouraged to work with the instructor to design their own basket, applying embellishment and color consideration. Hand-dyed materials will be available to weave into the baskets. The basket is finished with a pair of leather handle. Students will leave with an understanding of multiple weaving techniques, and a unique piece of work. Dimensions: approx. 10" diameter, 8" high.
Day 2: Forged Leaf Keychain with Arnie Barsky This class is ideal for the beginner blacksmith with little to no experience. We'll explore basic techniques first then move on to forging leaves to create a decorative leaf keychain. Long pants (no nylon clothing) and closed-toe shoes are required. Leather gloves, eye and ear protection are provided; you may wish to bring your own for fit and comfort
Day 3: Woven Napkins with Janet Gallant Let's reuse and save. In this class you will complete several cloth napkins. Make them all one color or create a collection using the yarn available in class. Don't be afraid to use the napkins and to wash and dry them. Janet's first woven napkin was created 15 years ago and still looks as good as new!
Day 4: Woodturning Pens with Frank Lagace In this beginner friendly class, you will learn the basics of wood lathe operation and safety while turning a piece of raw wood into a custom pen. Each student will leave with a beautiful, handcrafted pen and the knowledge to continue woodturning confidently on their own.Dates/Times

Balsam Fir Pillow Trees- November 2026

Using balsam fir needles, plaids, and glass beads, we'll create three different pillows inspired by the raised beadwork of the Tuscarora people and the rich history of balsam fir use in the Adirondacks. These are great for use in a dresser, car, or anywhere would enjoy the fragrance! Pillows are approximately 5" in height. No prior experience or sewing machine required.

Barn Quilt- May 2026

We've even seen billboards on the NY thruway advertising a trail! These art projects are a great way to commemorate a special time in your life or an upcoming holiday. You might have such fun that you'll want to make several like past students. During the class you'll learn some of the history and then learn how to plot out your design after you have chosen one from the many designs on offer. There are so many patterns and the best part is you don't need any quilting experience. Bring a friend and have some fun. Beginning Bluegrass Banjo- October 2026

Block by Block: Lego Prints- July 2026
$10.00In this fun hands-on workshop, students will use flat LEGO pieces and LEGO dots to build their own printmaking blocks. We will roll ink onto our designs and press them onto paper or fabric to make our own one-of-a-kind artwork! This exciting process is inspired by traditional Adirondack crafts where people decorated their own fabrics, furniture and signs by using carved blocks, stencils and nature themed patterns. Bloomy Rind Soft Cheeses- September 2026

Braided Rim Basket- November 2026

Build a Wee Lassie Canoe- July 2026

Rushton was one of the most famous canoe builders of his era. George Washington Sears, who wrote of his adventures under his pen name of Nessmuk as he recorded his paddling adventures throughout the Adirondacks, popularized these small, finely crafted canoes. Build a Wee Lassie Canoe- September 2026

Rushton was one of the most famous canoe builders of his era. George Washington Sears, who wrote of his adventures under his pen name of Nessmuk as he recorded his paddling adventures throughout the Adirondacks, popularized these small, finely crafted canoes. Carving Basics- October 2026

Ceramic Wind Chimes and Ornaments- July 2026
$160.00 – $185.00Price range: $160.00 through $185.00In this class we will create a decorative arrangement of small pieces or wind bells of ceramic to be suspended from a frame or used as ornaments. Students will use basic handbuilding techniques to create their pieces. After a drying period of three weeks, on the second day students will learn how to decorate and glaze their piece. Dress to mess. This class is suited for students ages 8 – 14 w/a parent, and 15 and up on their own. Supplies include clay, tool sharing, glazing and firing. Forms made will have a drying period before firing, and then glazing. Students will need to return to pick up finished pieces or make shipping arrangements with AFS.

Chair Caning- September 2026

Bring your chair needing a new seat (see requirements below). Tools and materials will be provided. Please note: This is an introductory class. Chairs MUST have 75 or fewer holes drilled into the chair seat and be square or rectangular in shape. A curve in the front of the chair is acceptable. Your chair should be in sound condition, with the old seat removed and any repairs and refinishing completed prior to class. If your chair does not meet these parameters, a limited number of additional chairs will be available for a nominal fee, and advice will be given to you on how to best weave the chair you have brought to the class.

Chip Carved Peace Board- September 2026

Copper Ornaments- June 2026
$120.00 – $135.00Price range: $120.00 through $135.00This copper ornament class will allow you to make your choice of 2 of the 3 items advertised. The process will have you cutting out the pieces, forming and texturing on an anvil. You will also be using a small torch as part of the texturing process, and soldering. The maple leaf ornament will have a "glass drop" soldered into the center. The mushroom can be used to hold your jewelry, earrings, and rings. The cap can be lifted off to slide rings on the stem. The stem is epoxied to a piece of bluestone serving as the base. The fern is a wall ornament that can be hung or laid in a windowsill. The fern is 10 inches tall, the maple leaf is 5 inches by 5 inches and the mushroom is 5 inches tall.

Crafting an Adirondack Story- July 2026
$10.00In this session, we turn the woods into our personal theater as we take a nature based story and turn it into a theatrical experience. Each child will make their own costume/prop and choose their own character in the story, for the purpose of performing a play. This is a 100% child led creative experience where each participant gets to bring their imagination to life! It will involve art and working with paint, glue, glitter and other such items. So please dress for mess. At the end of the session our work together will culminate with a live performance for family and friends. Children will take their costume/prop home.

Create Your Own Hardwood Cutting Board- July 2026
$195.00 – $220.00Price range: $195.00 through $220.00Come create a beautiful 12"-18" hardwood cutting board during two, half-day sessions. The class will discuss the types of wood being used, such as sapele, purple heart, African cherry and hard maple. The wood will be cut to size on a table saw. Then, using a joiner, students will make sure all pieces are the same size before gluing the various pieces together and allowing them to dry overnight. On the second day, the class will use planers to ensure that all boards are level and the same thickness. Students will then use a router to create a well and handles. Finally, the boards will be sanded.
