Adirondack Dulcimer Making- November 2024
Drawing from over 30 years of fine instrument making, Martin Macica will share his knowledge of the principles and practice of dulcimer making, leading participants through the process of making their own dulcimer from scratch using hand tools. This intensive course will cover every aspect of dulcimer making, including the carving of the scroll. Participants will leave with a working knowledge of dulcimer making, and a handcrafted instrument ready for a lifetime of making music.

Advanced Shaker Oval Boxes- October 2024
In this advanced class, experienced students will have the opportunity to work on either Shaker Serving Trays or Shaker Carriers. Construction steps and hardware application will be demonstrated, and all participants will put their hands-to-work on their own projects. Students will become familiar with construction techniques as they complete their projects. These projects have a firm place in Shaker history as they were a very popular offering to "The World's People" by Shaker craftsmen. American Tinsmithing Basics- November 2024
Learn basic 19th Century American tinsmithing from a master tinsmith. This class will introduce you to and teach you about all the tools, forming stakes, swedges and hand-operated machines used in a well-equipped 19th-Century tin shop. You will be shown how to do basic layout work, cutting, forming, assembly and soldering. Complete both a finger candle stick and a wall sconce by the end of class. You will be amazed at what you've accomplished.

Beginning Bluegrass Banjo- November 2024
Bluegrass banjo is the familiar sound that drove such favorites as the Beverly Hillbillies Theme Song, Rocky Top and Foggy Mountain Breakdown. In this class you will learn enough about the banjo so that you can use a variety of available instructional aids from your home and progress with learning Bluegrass banjo at your own pace. You will be exposed to the basics of playing 5-string Bluegrass banjo, including tunings, left hand chord shapes, right hand rolls, vamping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, chokes, chimes and how to read tablatures. We'll also look at online sites about banjo practice and instruction. Bring a playable 5-string banjo, two metal finger picks and a thumb pick. Although there will be several handouts, an audio recorder is a good idea.

Calligraphy with Turkey Quills- November 2024
Many of our "Founding Feathers" were indeed from turkeys! We will learn how to cut and letter with our own turkey quill pen using ink made from black walnut husks. Black Letter (Gothic) and Roman letter styles will be demonstrated and students will have an opportunity to practice using simple homemade markers.

Chip Carve a Greenman- November 2024
A symbol of the unity of man and nature, the Green Man is the figure of a human face surrounded by leaves and flowers. Students will receive a basswood, live edge plank and several possible green man designs, including one female face, to apply to the plank. The face will then be chip carved into the plank. Students will go home with a rustic, interesting and beautiful piece to hang on the wall.

Chip Carved Ornaments or Coasters- December 2024
Using traditional chip carving with small knives, students will carve attractive, intricate patterns into 4" basswood disks, stars or squares that can be used as either Christmas tree ornaments or coasters. All students will receive and carve a basswood board with practice designs and then use the same designs to carve into the ornaments or coasters. Decorate your own tree or give as a holiday gift! This class is for intermediate or advanced carvers.

Chip Carved Peace Board- November 2024
It is good to remind ourselves of the importance of PEACE in our lives. In this session, each student will receive two basswood boards, each 4 in. wide, 12 in. long and 3/8 in. thick. One board will have the word PEACE written on it, and a second board will say SHALOM. On each board the word will be bordered by a leaf design. A blank board may be available for students who want to write and carve PEACE in a language of their own choosing.

Alex is known in the woodland indian culture and historical programs for making all of his own traditional attire, including moccasins, and will instruct the class in the art of traditional eastern woodland Indian moccasin making. With his instruction, each student will make their own pair of center seam-pucker toe leather moccasins; these were the most common among the eastern woodland tribes. Students will be using deer hide leather and awls to make primitive, traditional eastern woodland moccasins.

Copper Lanterns- May 2024
Create your own copper Lantern on a Bluestone base. You will punch and shape the copper sides and top and attach them to a stone base. The Lantern features a glass drop ,soldered into the 3 sides of the lantern. The punched holes and glass create a pleasant appearance when lit with a candle. The Lantern will be 9 ½” tall, and the base is 5 ½” by 5 ½”.

Copper Vase- June 2024
One of the most distinctive materials in Adirondack architecture, furniture and art is white birch bark. We will use a section of white birch log, with a copper cylinder inside the log. There will be a copper vine accent piece spiraling around the vase. Students will be forming and texturing the copper vine and soldering the inside cylinder. The vase, when completed will be wet or dry and approximately 8” tall with a 3” diameter. There is no experience necessary for this class.

Create Your Own Hardwood Cutting Board- December 2024
Come create a beautiful 12"-18" hardwood cutting board during two, half-day sessions. The class will discuss the types of wood being used, such as sapele, purple heart, African cherry and hard maple. The wood will be cut to size on a table saw. Then, using a joiner, students will make sure all pieces are the same size before gluing the various pieces together and allowing them to dry overnight. On the second day, the class will use planers to ensure that all boards are level and the same thickness. Students will then use a router to create a well and handles. Finally, the boards will be sanded.

Dovetailed Serving Tray- December 2024
With your own hands, craft a pine serving tray suitable for many things. Starting with wood prepared and cut to finished sizes, students will work on cutting and joining the sides and dovetail joints. Students will continue by gluing, sanding and cutting out the sides for the handle. The tray will be finished with a Danish oil.

From Fleece to Yarn- May 2024
Wool is a versatile ecological material for knitting, felting, and weaving, but processing it can be a bit tricky for a beginner. In this workshop, you will learn how to work with wool starting with raw fleece straight off the sheep and ending with handspun yarn ready to be incorporated into your craft projects. We will play with wool from a variety of sheep breeds, including some rare heritage breeds, and we’ll learn how to use their different qualities to create the perfect materials for your projects. You will learn how to use different wool processing tools like hand cards, wool combs, and a drum carder. If you like starting with natural materials and seeing them through to the finished product, this is a great workshop for you!

Hardwood Spoon Carving- December 2024
In this class students will design, shape and carve a serving spoon. Skills explored include: making a template and transferring it to a blank, carving and shaping the bowl and back of the spoon, use of hand tools such as gouges, scrapers, coping saws, and spokeshaves, and sanding and finishing techniques. Students will leave class with a beautiful handcrafted hardwood spoon to use in their own kitchens or to give as a gift!

This is a fun and relaxing art that helps keep fingers nimble and creative ideas flowing. Introduction to Woodburning- November 2024
You don?t have to be an artist to create wood burned art. This introduction to wood burning, also known as pyrography, will teach you how to create your own unique artwork. We will cover all the basics: safety, burners, tips, transferring images, wood species, adding color and protective finishes. Resources will also be shared for continued learning after class completion. In class, students will try out various tips to see what each is capable of. Students will then have the opportunity to work on up to three projects of nature or Adirondack inspired images.

Open Forge Night- November 2024
Interested in blacksmithing but unsure how to start? Open Forge Night is the place for you! Every third Wednesday of the month during our blacksmithing season, come see demonstrations by expert blacksmith Steve Gurzler. Observing the demonstration is free and open to the public. If you want to try your hand at blacksmithing there is a $25 fee to cover the cost of materials. Safety precautions must be followed – including hard shoes with no open toes, long pants, goggles (supplied) and gloves (supplied).

Quilt Block Party- June 2024
In this series of classes, a new quilt block will be introduced each month along with the techniques used to cut, piece, and construct the quilt block. Color is an important component to block and quilt design. Examples will be presented for each block to help you create a quilt that is pleasing to your personal color and style. Each offering can stand on its own, so take one, a few or all five! Students should have some basic knowledge of sewing prior to taking this class.
May 14: Log Cabin Quilt Block – A nice beginner block to practice the mastery of the ¼” seam and the skill of squaring off the block as it builds in size. The technique to sandwich the quilt layers will be taught as well as completing the quilt with a bias binding. Students will use their blocks to create placemats.
June 11: Four Patch Star Quilt Block – This is a well-known traditional block with many variations. We will look at the variations and dream of future quilting possibilities. Students will learn several methods to cut and sew half square and quarter triangles; the building block for an endless variety of quilt blocks. Sewing techniques will be shared and practiced to create the points of the star. You will also learn how to complete a pillow with or without a zipper.
July 9: Traditional Basket Block – This is another traditional block that will use the skills taught in the Four Patch Star Block Party. Variations in color will often make this block a popular choice for seasonal quilts and table runners. Several examples will be shared. New sewing and quilting techniques in this class will include placing blocks on point, sashing, and adding a sleeve to make this a wall hanging.
August 13: Blazing Star- The Blazing Star Quilt Block is spectacular and will use the skills acquired in previous block parties. You will be surprised to learn that the challenge to this clock comes in organizing your pieces before you sew each block, the sewing should no longer be your challenge.
September 10: Maple Leaf Block – A traditional block that is very popular in quilts and seasonal table runners and wall hangings. Just in time for Autumn in the Adirondacks, create your own display of fall leaves in a quilted project for your home.Dates/Times

Quilt Block Party- May 2024
In this series of classes, a new quilt block will be introduced each month along with the techniques used to cut, piece, and construct the quilt block. Color is an important component to block and quilt design. Examples will be presented for each block to help you create a quilt that is pleasing to your personal color and style. Each offering can stand on its own, so take one, a few or all five! Students should have some basic knowledge of sewing prior to taking this class.
May 14: Log Cabin Quilt Block – A nice beginner block to practice the mastery of the ¼” seam and the skill of squaring off the block as it builds in size. The technique to sandwich the quilt layers will be taught as well as completing the quilt with a bias binding. Students will use their blocks to create placemats.
June 11: Four Patch Star Quilt Block – This is a well-known traditional block with many variations. We will look at the variations and dream of future quilting possibilities. Students will learn several methods to cut and sew half square and quarter triangles; the building block for an endless variety of quilt blocks. Sewing techniques will be shared and practiced to create the points of the star. You will also learn how to complete a pillow with or without a zipper.
July 9: Traditional Basket Block – This is another traditional block that will use the skills taught in the Four Patch Star Block Party. Variations in color will often make this block a popular choice for seasonal quilts and table runners. Several examples will be shared. New sewing and quilting techniques in this class will include placing blocks on point, sashing, and adding a sleeve to make this a wall hanging.
August 13: Blazing Star- The Blazing Star Quilt Block is spectacular and will use the skills acquired in previous block parties. You will be surprised to learn that the challenge to this clock comes in organizing your pieces before you sew each block, the sewing should no longer be your challenge.
September 10: Maple Leaf Block – A traditional block that is very popular in quilts and seasonal table runners and wall hangings. Just in time for Autumn in the Adirondacks, create your own display of fall leaves in a quilted project for your home.Dates/Times

Tin Ornaments- November 2024
Christmas time in the Adirondacks is a magical time of year. In this tinsmithing class you will make multiple festive holiday ornaments in a variety of designs including icicles, spirals, snowflakes and angels, in addition to your own unique designs! No previous tinsmithing experience is necessary in this class. Perfect for students 12 and older, this is a great class for the whole family!

Tomahawk Forging- May 2024
In just 3 days you will learn to forge a tomahawk—one of the earliest multi-use tools—from Joe Szilaski, a Master Smith in 3 countries: the US, Hungary and Austria. This is an excellent introduction bladesmithing. You will have the chance to customize your own design and proudly walk away with a unique piece.

Weaving Log Cabin- November 2024
In this class you will design an item of your choosing (scarf, table runner, place mats, etc.) and go through the entire process to create it on a floor loom using the twill structure. Guidance from the instructor will be provided as needed. This class will include instruction on winding a warp with two threads at a time and weaving with two shuttles. Many fiber options and color choices will be available. Intro to Floor Loom Weaving experience, including winding a warp and dressing a loom is required.

Weaving Splint Seats- November 2024
Chairs with four intact rails can accept several different types of woven seats, including splint seats woven in various patterns. In this class you'll learn to weave a herringbone pattern splint seat onto a chair using flat reed. Please bring a chair that is in sound condition with the old seat removed. Any refinishing you wish to do should be completed prior to the class

Wooden Cross-Country Skis- October 2024
Learn to build old-time traditional cross-country skis and preserve a piece of North Country history. You will cut, plane and bend using a variety of woodworking techniques to complete a set of wood skis. Imagine the fulfillment of skiing the beautiful Adirondack trails and woods on hand-made skis. Uncle Sven would be proud.

Woven Towels- June 2024
One loom, one warp, so many possibilities! In this class the looms are warped with a natural color and several towels can be woven at the loom. Several weaving patterns and design options will be demonstrated. Select the pattern and colors and you’ll be on your way to a few hand woven towels for yourself or to share.
