A Taste of the Forge II- September 2023
If you’ve taken Taste of the Forge or another basic blacksmithing class at AFS, then you’re ready for Taste of the Forge II! This class, taught by blacksmith Steve Gurzler, builds on the students’ prior experience to bring them to the next level, pursuing more advanced skills. Like in Taste of the Forge, we will follow the Artist Blacksmiths Association of North America (ABANA) curriculum in a small class format. Students can expect to create 2 or more useful or decorative objects over the course of 3 weekday evenings.

American Tinsmithing Basics- November 2023
Learn basic 19th Century American tinsmithing from a master tinsmith. This class will introduce you to and teach you about all the tools, forming stakes, swedges and hand-operated machines used in a well-equipped 19th-Century tin shop. You will be shown how to do basic layout work, cutting, forming, assembly and soldering. Complete both a finger candle stick and a wall sconce by the end of class. You will be amazed at what you’ve accomplished.

Autumn Leaves: Intro to Working with Copper- September 2023
Copper is a very different material from iron and is capable of being finished in beautiful ways. This class will cover the basics of non-ferrous forging, including annealing and work hardening, as well as finishes and patinas. Students will start with a bar of copper that will be worked hot and cold to form a maple leaf. Then the instructor will share an ancient and closely guarded secret technique, which gives the leaves a red and gold finish.

Backpacker Guitar- November 2023
Come join us in the making of your very own handmade Backpacker guitar. Drawing from over 35 years of instrument making, Martin Macica will share his knowledge of the principles and practice of guitar making, leading participants through the process of making their own versatile backpacker guitar. Beginning Bluegrass Banjo- November 2023
Bluegrass banjo is the familiar sound that drove such favorites as the Beverly Hillbillies Theme Song, Rocky Top and Foggy Mountain Breakdown. In this class you will learn enough about the banjo so that you can use a variety of available instructional aids from your home and progress with learning Bluegrass banjo at your own pace. You will be exposed to the basics of playing 5-string Bluegrass banjo, including tunings, left hand chord shapes, right hand rolls, vamping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, chokes, chimes and how to read tablatures. We’ll also look at online sites about banjo practice and instruction. Bring a playable 5-string banjo, two metal finger picks and a thumb pick. Although there will be several handouts, an audio recorder is a good idea.

Birch Bark Ornaments- September 2023
In this relaxing class, students will create their own unique hanging ornaments out of birch bark. Materials and patterns for the ornaments will vary in size. All three have pine needles stitched to the edge with waxed linen. Each will hang by a leather cord and jewelry clasp.

Birch Bark Sampler- September 2023
These projects: the Mini Penobscot and Mini Canoe are constructed with birch bark similar to those made years ago by New England Algonquian and Penobscot Natives. Much smaller in size and to be respectful some changes have been made. Needle skills are helpful as these are stitched with waxed linen and embellished with pine needles.

Blacksmithing 102D: Using Jigs and Making Batches- September 2023
Hooks are one of the most useful things a new blacksmith can make. They are used in many projects, and this makes them an excellent stepping stone for learning how to manufacture in bulk. We will start by making hooks by hand with just the hammer and anvil. After that, you will use various tools and jugs to produce 5 matching hooks. This class is intended for students who have taken a 101 class and understand the basics of forging and managing a coal fire.

Blacksmithing 103: Coat Rack- October 2023
This final intro to blacksmithing class uses all of the forging techniques taught in the previous classes to create a small coat or pot rack, with hand forged hooks riveted to the base. This is also an introduction to joinery, as students will learn how to rivet pieces together. Other techniques including pass-throughs and mortise and tenon will be demonstrated and discussed.

Blacksmithing for Couples: Candleholder- September 2023
This intro class is meant for couples to learn and work together on a candle holder, perfect for romantic dinners together. Students will learn everything needed to use a coal fire, hammer, and anvil to move and shape metal. Two smiths will share a forge and an anvil and learn how to work as a team to accomplish things that an individual smith would not be able to do easily.

Bloomy Rind Soft Cheeses- August 2023
Taught by Sheila Flanagan and Sal Speights, both internationally awarded cheesemakers, known for creative semi-aged cheeses, this course will focus on all the simplest aspects of cheesemaking and the vast variety of cheeses that can be made based on different cultures, rennets, additives and mechanical processing methods. Students will learn how to make bloomy rind cheeses, age, and inoculate them and how to add variations to their cheese. Build a Rustic Birdhouse- August 2023
Anyone can learn to make a rustic birdhouse in just a few hours. A birdhouse is a simple structure with seven basic parts: two sides, a front and back, a bottom, and two pieces for the top. Power tools are not necessary to cut the wood; it can be done with a handsaw. Using rough-cut lumber, you will construct a rustic birdhouse that can be functional and/or decorative. Choose from several birdhouse designs. There will be a short discussion about nesting birds, feeding birds and suitable houses for area birds. Participants are encouraged to bring objects (such as old drawer pulls, doorknobs, hardware, etc.) from home. Adults and teens welcome; children ages 10-14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Build a Wee Lassie Canoe- October 2023
The original Wee Lassie was a lapstrake-built open cedar canoe made in 1863 by J. Henry Rushton of Canton, NY. Rushton was one of the most famous canoe builders of his era. George Washington Sears, who wrote of his adventures under his pen name of Nessmuk as he recorded his paddling adventures throughout the Adirondacks, popularized these small, finely crafted canoes. Come spend 11 wonderful days with master instructor Larry Benjamin building your own Wee Lassie. You will be guided through every step of the building process. Leave with a beautiful, lightweight canoe that handles well in the water. Open to all level of student.

Carving Lettering- August 2023
In this class you will explore the history of carved letters, including raised and incised examples. Design, proper layout, and spacing will be taught. The correct approach to handling carving tools and interesting techniques will be demonstrated. Sharpening and tool maintenance will be shown. Students of all levels will be able to learn how to carve on flat or shaped surfaces. This class is a must for any student of carving.

Chair Caning- November 2023
Spend a few days learning how to cane your own chair during which you’ll learn how to weave the traditional 7-step caning pattern. Bring along a chair in good condition in need of a new caned seat. Ideally, the chair seat will be square or rectangular in shape and have fewer than 85 holes drilled into the seat frame. Any repairs and refinishing should be completed before the class begins. Please bring a chair in sound condition, with the old cane removed, if possible.

Chip Carved Ornaments or Coasters- December 2023
Using traditional chip carving with small knives, students will carve attractive, intricate patterns into 4″ basswood disks, stars or squares that can be used as either Christmas tree ornaments or coasters. All students will receive and carve a basswood board with practice designs and then use the same designs to carve into the ornaments or coasters. Decorate your own tree or give as a holiday gift! Copper Bowl- September 2023
In this class students will create a beautiful copper bowl from a 12″ x 12″ sheet of 16-gauge copper. Students will pound and hand tool the sheet into an 9″ diameter, approx. 2″ deep bowl. Students will also make a decorative vine with leaves from copper that will be attached to the rim of the bowl. Some soldering will be involved in this class.

Copper Lanterns- September 2023
Create your own copper Lantern on a Bluestone base. You will punch and shape the copper sides and top and attach them to a stone base. The Lantern features a glass drop ,soldered into the 3 sides of the lantern. The punched holes and glass create a pleasant appearance when lit with a candle. The Lantern will be 9 ½” tall, and the base is 5 ½” by 5 ½”.

Create Your Own Hardwood Cutting Board- December 2023
Come create a beautiful 12″-18″ hardwood cutting board during two, half-day sessions. The class will discuss the types of wood being used, such as sapele, purple heart, African cherry and hard maple. The wood will be cut to size on a table saw. Then, using a joiner, students will make sure all pieces are the same size before gluing the various pieces together and allowing them to dry overnight. On the second day, the class will use planers to ensure that all boards are level and the same thickness. Students will then use a router to create a well and handles. Finally, the boards will be sanded.

Fall Lakes and Waterways at Dawn Photo Tour- October 2023
Here’s your chance to grab gorgeous sunrise shots. In this one-day nature photography tour you will travel to several destinations that are all within a reasonable distance of each other. You’ll spend 90% of the day shooting pictures at beautiful nearby Adirondack lakes and waterways. This nature photography tour is designed for those who are already comfortable with camera basics such as the relationship between aperture, shutter and ISO settings. Start this eight-hour day with a very brief discussion, then take the rest of the day to play with photo techniques in the field at nearby photo locations. A great class for those who wish to receive mentoring while in the field.

Fibonacci Thirteen- August 2023
Barbara designed this basket inspired by the Fibonacci sequence of numbers. The basket is woven on a Shaker Cathead base with a two-by-two twill in natural reed. Students will weave the sides in a contrasting color reed to emphasize the 13 spirals which the pattern will create. Hand-shaping techniques will be stressed, allowing students to produce a beautifully proportioned piece. Barbara will lead a discussion on “The Nature of Numbers,” a talk on where the Fibonacci sequence exists in nature.

Forging Damascus- October 2023
This class will cover the basic process of forging pattern-welded Damascus steel. Students will weld up several small billets and explore the basics of pattern development. Students will also explore several common methods of forge welding as well as covering the science of forge welding. Students can expect to learn the process of choosing steels that will give good pattern and function well together in the final billet. The class will cover how to lay out and prepare the steel for forge welding both in the starting stack and in subsequent re-stacks. Special attention will be given to hand work and the making of patterns well suited to limited machinery. The main areas of pattern development will be explored as well as touching on some more advanced patterning techniques. Once the billets are forged and patterned, the class will grind and polish a window or sample tile to etch and reveal the pattern. The class will cover several techniques to etch the sample for higher contrast. The techniques taught in class should offer students the building blocks to begin an exploration of Damascus patterns on their own. Experience of basic blacksmithing techniques suggested.
