A Taste of the Forge II- September 2024
If you’ve taken Taste of the Forge or another basic blacksmithing class at AFS, then you’re ready for Taste of the Forge II! This class, taught by blacksmith Steve Gurzler, builds on the students’ prior experience to bring them to the next level, pursuing more advanced skills. Like in Taste of the Forge, we will follow the Artist Blacksmiths Association of North America (ABANA) curriculum in a small class format. Students can expect to create 2 or more useful or decorative objects over the course of 3 weekday evenings.

A Taste of the Forge- May 2024
Would you like to try blacksmithing, and get a taste of the craft? Join instructor Steve Gurzler for 3 weekday evenings to learn how to operate a coal forge to bring metal to incandescent heat and shape it with hammer in hand. This class will use the Artist Blacksmiths Association of North America (ABANA) curriculum to teach the basics of blacksmithing. Students can expect to create 2 or more projects during the 3 evenings. Class size is limited to ensure all can advance at their own pace.

Adirondack Berry Picking and Gathering Basket- September 2024
This basket is a variation on an Adirondack Pack Basket, one of the oldest surviving traditions inside the Adirondack Park. You will use a continuous weave technique and hand shaping to create this wonderfully useful basket. Bridle leather will be used to weave the strapping and create a strap that will leave your hands free for blueberry picking or any other type of gathering. It also makes a great container to keep your yarn when knitting socks. The approximate finished size is 10″ – 12″ tall (width may vary). This is a challenging class with lots of hand shaping.

Adirondack Dulcimer Making- November 2024
Drawing from over 30 years of fine instrument making, Martin Macica will share his knowledge of the principles and practice of dulcimer making, leading participants through the process of making their own dulcimer from scratch using hand tools. This intensive course will cover every aspect of dulcimer making, including the carving of the scroll. Participants will leave with a working knowledge of dulcimer making, and a handcrafted instrument ready for a lifetime of making music.

Adirondack Evergreens- July 2024
Students will weave a twined base on a red oak d-handle, building the sides in a start-stop plain weave. A sturdy strip of birch bark is woven onto the base at the onset. The evergreen trees are overlaid on the spokes and through the weavers using hand-dyed reed. An optional Adirondack themed rusty tin addition may be hung inside the handle.

Advanced Shaker Oval Boxes- October 2024
In this advanced class, experienced students will have the opportunity to work on either Shaker Serving Trays or Shaker Carriers. Construction steps and hardware application will be demonstrated, and all participants will put their hands-to-work on their own projects. Students will become familiar with construction techniques as they complete their projects. These projects have a firm place in Shaker history as they were a very popular offering to “The World’s People” by Shaker craftsmen. With Shaker inspired elegance these are sure to become instant heirlooms!

American Tinsmithing Basics- November 2024
Learn basic 19th Century American tinsmithing from a master tinsmith. This class will introduce you to and teach you about all the tools, forming stakes, swedges and hand-operated machines used in a well-equipped 19th-Century tin shop. You will be shown how to do basic layout work, cutting, forming, assembly and soldering. Complete both a finger candle stick and a wall sconce by the end of class. You will be amazed at what you’ve accomplished.

Basic Shaker Oval Boxes- October 2024
One of the most iconic items of Shaker woodworking, nesting oval boxes share elegance, simplicity and functionality equally. Using carefully prepared thin strips of wood each participant will carve the “swallowtails” of “fingers” on one end before soaking them in a hot water bath to soften for bending. Copper tacks are installed to hold the oval hoop together before top and bottom boards are fit and held by wooden pegs. Each student will construct five nesting oval boxes from cherry wood in this two-day workshop. This class is open to all experience levels, no woodworking experience required!

Beginning Bluegrass Banjo- November 2024
Bluegrass banjo is the familiar sound that drove such favorites as the Beverly Hillbillies Theme Song, Rocky Top and Foggy Mountain Breakdown. In this class you will learn enough about the banjo so that you can use a variety of available instructional aids from your home and progress with learning Bluegrass banjo at your own pace. You will be exposed to the basics of playing 5-string Bluegrass banjo, including tunings, left hand chord shapes, right hand rolls, vamping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, chokes, chimes and how to read tablatures. We’ll also look at online sites about banjo practice and instruction. Bring a playable 5-string banjo, two metal finger picks and a thumb pick. Although there will be several handouts, an audio recorder is a good idea.

Bicycle Basket- June 2024
As long as there have been bicycles it has been fashionable and elegant to have a basket on it. With all its uses this basket is woven with reed similar in shape to the Shaker style of basketry. Having adjustable Shaker tape to attach to your handlebars makes this a fun and novel project. Dimensions: 9” long x 7” wide x 8” high. Intermediate weaving level, hand strength needed.

Birch Bark & Leather Bowl- August 2024
As you stitch through the folded birch bark of this fancy bowl, you’ll be reminded that that years ago this “bowl” was simple in design and was an important tool utilized by Native Americans. The instructor will harvest the paper birch and students will plan their stitching options and apply beads to decorate. Sizes will vary. Intermediate stitching skills and hand strength needed.

Birch Container Sewn with Spruce Root- August 2024
Creating this container requires sewing each of two cylinders of birch bark together, using two different techniques. The two cylinders are joined by sewing a rim of spruce roots, as well as sewing on a base of 3 layers. Students will also learn harvesting and preparation of spruce roots, and incorporate a design with porcupine quills on the outside wall, if desired.

Birch Container- August 2024
This birch bark container is made from a sheet of birch taken from a fallen tree. In this class you will use heat to bend the birch, attach a wooden base, and choose your stitch pattern using waxed linen. Additional embellishments will be available if students would like. Bloomy Rind Soft Cheeses- August 2024
Taught by Sheila Flanagan and Sal Speights, both internationally awarded cheesemakers, known for creative semi-aged cheeses, this course will focus on all the simplest aspects of cheesemaking and the vast variety of cheeses that can be made based on different cultures, rennets, additives and mechanical processing methods. Students will learn how to make bloomy rind cheeses, age, and inoculate them and how to add variations to their cheese. Please note: Students will check in at the Folk School, 51 Main Street, Lake Luzerne, NY. They will then travel to Nettle Meadow’s Plant/Tasting Room 1256 Lake Ave., Lake Luzerne, NY for the duration of the class.

Anyone can learn to make a rustic birdhouse in just a few hours. A birdhouse is a simple structure with seven basic parts: two sides, a front and back, a bottom, and two pieces for the top. Power tools are not necessary to cut the wood; it can be done with a handsaw. Using rough-cut lumber, you will construct a rustic birdhouse that can be functional and/or decorative. Choose from several birdhouse designs. There will be a short discussion about nesting birds, feeding birds and suitable houses for area birds. Participants are encouraged to bring objects (such as old drawer pulls, doorknobs, hardware, etc.) from home. Adults and teens welcome; children ages 10-14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Build a Wee Lassie Canoe- June 2024
The original Wee Lassie was a lapstrake-built open cedar canoe made in 1863 by J. Henry Rushton of Canton, NY. Rushton was one of the most famous canoe builders of his era. George Washington Sears, who wrote of his adventures under his pen name of Nessmuk as he recorded his paddling adventures throughout the Adirondacks, popularized these small, finely crafted canoes. Come spend 11 wonderful days with master instructor Larry Benjamin building your own Wee Lassie. You will be guided through every step of the building process. Leave with a beautiful, lightweight canoe that handles well in the water. Open to all level of student.

Calligraphy with Turkey Quills- November 2024
Many of our “Founding Feathers” were indeed from turkeys! We will learn how to cut and letter with our own turkey quill pen using ink made from black walnut husks. Black Letter (Gothic) and Roman letter styles will be demonstrated and students will have an opportunity to practice using simple homemade markers.

Camper’s Frying Pan- June 2024
In this class students will learn basic sheet metal forging and riveting while creating a small camper’s frying pan. We’ll start with a disk of heavy-gauge sheet metal and forge a frying pan suitable for campfire or stove top use with a decorative forged handle. This class is recommended for students who have taken a basic course or who have some blacksmithing experience. Quality hearing protection is recommended, along with leather gloves.

Students will create a replica of Michelangelo’s Florentine Greenman. This classic face has been seen throughout history in many forms. The leaves create or adorn the face. A fascinating project. Ceramic Wind Chimes- May 2024
We will create a decorative arrangement of small pieces or wind bell of ceramic to be suspended from a frame such as driftwood. After it can be strung and hung so as make a tinkling sound in the breeze. Wind chimes have been used for centuries as a way to sooth us and provide us with a sense of peace and calm, associated with religious beliefs, meditation, and creating a serene environment. The symbolism of wind chimes is often tied to good luck, health, and happiness. Join us in our hand-building clay exploration. Dress to mess. Class is suited for students ages 8 – 14 w/a parent, and 15 and up on their own. Supplies include clay, tool sharing, glazing and firing. Forms made will have a drying period before firing, and then glazing. Students will need to return to pick up finished pieces or make shipping arrangements with AFS.
