A Taste of the Forge II- October 2022
If you’ve taken Taste of the Forge or another basic blacksmithing class at AFS, then you’re ready for Taste of the Forge II! This class, taught by blacksmith Steve Gurzler, builds on the students’ prior experience to bring them to the next level, pursuing more advanced skills. Like in Taste of the Forge, we will follow the Artist Blacksmiths Association of North America (ABANA) curriculum in a small class format. Students can expect to create 2 or more useful or decorative objects over the course of 3 weekday evenings.

A Taste of the Forge- September 2022
Would you like to try blacksmithing, and get a taste of the craft? Join instructor Steve Gurzler for 3 weekday evenings to learn how to operate a coal forge to bring metal to incandescent heat and shape it with hammer in hand. This class will use the Artist Blacksmiths Association of North America (ABANA) curriculum to teach the basics of blacksmithing. Students can expect to create 2 or more projects during the 3 evenings. Class size is limited to ensure all can advance at their own pace.

Adirondack Dulcimer Making- August 2022
Drawing from over 30 years of fine instrument making, Martin Macica will share his knowledge of the principles and practice of dulcimer making, leading participants through the process of making their own dulcimer from scratch using hand tools. This intensive course will cover every aspect of dulcimer making, including the carving of the scroll. Participants will leave with a working knowledge of dulcimer making, and a handcrafted instrument ready for a lifetime of making music.

American Tinsmithing Basics- November 2022
Learn basic 19th Century American tinsmithing from a master tinsmith. This class will introduce you to and teach you about all the tools, forming stakes, swedges and hand-operated machines used in a well-equipped 19th-Century tin shop. You will be shown how to do basic layout work, cutting, forming, assembly and soldering. Complete both a finger candle stick and a wall sconce by the end of class. You will be amazed at what you’ve accomplished.

Autumn Leaves: Intro to Working with Copper- September 2022
Copper is a very different material from iron and is capable of being finished in beautiful ways. This class will cover the basics of non-ferrous forging, including annealing and work hardening, as well as finishes and patinas. Students will start with a bar of copper that will be worked hot and cold to form a maple leaf. Then the instructor will share an ancient and closely guarded secret technique, which gives the leaves a red and gold finish.

Beginning Bluegrass Banjo- November 2022
Bluegrass banjo is the familiar sound that drove such favorites as the Beverly Hillbillies Theme Song, Rocky Top and Foggy Mountain Breakdown. In this class you will learn enough about the banjo so that you can use a variety of available instructional aids from your home and progress with learning Bluegrass banjo at your own pace. You will be exposed to the basics of playing 5-string Bluegrass banjo, including tunings, left hand chord shapes, right hand rolls, vamping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, chokes, chimes and how to read tablatures. We’ll also look at online sites about banjo practice and instruction. Bring a playable 5-string banjo, two metal finger picks and a thumb pick. Although there will be several handouts, an audio recorder is a good idea.

Birch Bark Bowls- August 2022
Learn how to cut, fold and shape from a rigid sheet of birch bark. Add pine needles or a tree branch for the rim and stitch with waxed linen. Students will make one bowl in class and leave with material to make another at home. This is a nice birch bark set to display! Low bowl: 6″ x 7.5″. Round bowl: 3.5″ x 3.5″ x 12.5″ around.

This is a great class for beginners with limited experience with woodworking and tools. Blacksmithing 102A: Bottle Opener- July 2022
This class follows the lessons learned in Blacksmithing 101. First students will use top tools and punches to make decorative faces. To make the bottle opener, students start with bar stock and will learn how to fuller, punch and drift, as well as work in a team with another smith.

Blacksmithing 102B: Using Jigs and Making Batches- July 2022
Hooks are one of the most useful things a new blacksmith can make. Russ started off making them as practice pieces but found that they get used wherever they end up. They are used in many projects, and this makes them an excellent stepping stone for learning how to manufacture things in bulk. We will start by making hooks by hand with just the hammer and anvil. After that, students will use various tools and jigs to speed up production. The goal is to produce 5 matching hooks. This class is intended for students who have taken a 101 class and understand the basics of forging and how to manage a coal fire.

Blacksmithing 103: Coat Rack- September 2022
This final intro to blacksmithing class uses all of the forging techniques taught in the previous classes to create a small coat or pot rack, with hand forged hooks riveted to the base. This is also an introduction o joinery, as students will learn how to rivet pieces together. Other techniques including pass-throughs and mortise and tenon will be demonstrated and discussed.

Anyone can learn to make a rustic birdhouse in just a few hours. A birdhouse is a simple structure with seven basic parts: two sides, a front and back, a bottom, and two pieces for the top. Power tools are not necessary to cut the wood; it can be done with a handsaw. Using rough-cut lumber, you will construct a rustic birdhouse that can be functional and/or decorative. Choose from several birdhouse designs. There will be a short discussion about nesting birds, feeding birds and suitable houses for area birds. Participants are encouraged to bring objects (such as old drawer pulls, doorknobs, hardware, etc.) from home. Adults and teens welcome; children ages 10-14 must be accompanied by an adult.

George Washington Sears, who wrote of his adventures under his pen name of Nessmuk as he recorded his paddling adventures throughout the Adirondacks, popularized these small, finely crafted canoes. Come spend 11 wonderful days with master instructor Larry Benjamin building your own Wee Lassie. You will be guided through every step of the building process. Cheesemaking: Chevre, Valencay and Crottin- July 2022
Come and learn to make Chevre, Aged Chevre, Valencay, and Crottin the traditional way. We will learn to make our own cultures rather than using laboratory produced cultures and will even discuss how to make homemade rennet. We will also make yogurt and cultured butter. All products will be made using organic, grass-fed, raw milk. It is recommended that you purchase (and review) the book, “The Art of Natural Cheesemaking”, by David Asher. This class is a combination of demonstration and hands on.

Chip Carved Optical Illusion Plate- November 2022
The simple triangular chip can be used to create many interesting, unusual patterns such as this one on an optical illusion plate; creating the illusion of roundness on a flat plane. Each student will receive a 10″ plate with the triangular chip pattern already applied. Carving out half of the chips will create the illusion. Once stained or painted, students will have an attractive piece to hang on the wall or display on a table. The plate is sure to surprise and interest all who see it!

Chip Carved Ornaments or Coasters- December 2022
Using traditional chip carving with small knives, students will carve attractive, intricate patterns into 4″ basswood disks, stars or squares that can be used as either Christmas tree ornaments or coasters. All students will receive and carve a basswood board with practice designs and then use the same designs to carve into the ornaments or coasters. Decorate your own tree or give as a holiday gift! This class is for intermediate or advanced carvers.

Chip Carving a Green Man- October 2022
The Green Man is an ancient symbol of the union of man and nature; a human face is surrounded by floral forms. Each student will receive a basswood plank with the bark on one edge and, separately, a few Green Man designs. After selecting the design of choice, the student will apply the design to the plank and carve the face into the wood.

Chopper- August 2022
In this 3-day class students will learn how to forge a 10 chopping knife. Blades will be heat treated and sharpened, then a wood handle with a steel ferrule will be crafted and fit to the blade.

Coffin Handled Bowie Knife- September 2022
The Bowie Knife conjures thoughts of legend and history. In this class students will create their own version of this iconic American knife. Students will begin by forging the blades to shape from high carbon steel bar stock, followed by grinding and heat treating the blade. Once the blades are finished the class will turn to the handles fabricating a guard, bolster and wood handle for their knives.
This class will focus on several key techniques in knifemaking: fitting a guard, as well as shaping and designing hidden tang wooden handles.

Comb Back Windsor Armchair- July 2022
Bring your own turnings from David’s Turning Chair Parts class or choose from walnut, cherry or ambrosia maple parts provided by instructor David Abeel. Make an heirloom that is comfortable, well-engineered and styled to fit in traditional or contemporary settings. Students will do compound drilling and work with a variety of simple jigs and tools along with compass planes, travishers, draw knives, scorp and hand planes. All skill levels are welcome. Complete Basic Blacksmithing- September 2022
This basic class will give you the foundation needed to start out on your journey of blacksmithing. You’ll learn fire management, hammering methods, drawing out, upsetting, cutting, splitting, twisting, and convenience bending along with a demo of forge welding. Double-Bottomed Bushel Basket- August 2022
This is a great class for a first-time weaver, as well as for those who would like to learn some new weave patterns to create a unique piece. A variety of techniques will be discussed, including arrow weave and four-rod wale, as well as the use of color to create pattern. Students will begin by weaving a double-bottomed twined base. As they weave up the sides with the stop-start method, students may then choose to incorporate a variety of color and pattern which interests them. The basket is finished with a pair of leather handles made during class. With a double-bottomed base, this is a very sturdy and functional basket, as well as uniquely yours. Dimensions approx. 10″ diameter, 8″ high.

Eco Print Silk Scarf- August 2022
Join Marjolaine in a 1-day class to create an eco print silk scarf. During this workshop you will explore the technique of eco printing, a method of transferring the pigment within leaves and other plant matter to silk fabric via steaming or boiling. It is a technique for printing on fabric with the natural dye color present in plants.

Fall Lakes and Waterways at Dawn Photo Tour- October 2022
Here’s your chance to grab gorgeous sunrise shots. In this one-day nature photography tour you will travel to several destinations that are all within a reasonable distance of each other. You’ll spend 90% of the day shooting pictures at beautiful nearby Adirondack lakes and waterways. This nature photography tour is designed for those who are already comfortable with camera basics such as the relationship between aperture, shutter and ISO settings. Start this eight-hour day with a very brief discussion, then take the rest of the day to play with photo techniques in the field at nearby photo locations. A great class for those who wish to receive mentoring while in the field.

Felt a “sleepy squirrel” that could be found in a leafy nest anywhere in the Adirondacks. You will use a simple armiture, natural wool fibers, and easy to use techniques to create a lifelike image of a sleeping gray squirrel. The process of lactic-acid fermentation increases vitamins, enzymes and beneficial bacteria naturally present in good whole, fermented and culturally traditional foods.
