A Taste of the Forge- May 2026

Join instructor Steve Gurzler for 3 weekday evenings to learn how to operate a coal forge to bring metal to incandescent heat and shape it with hammer in hand. This class will use the Artist Blacksmiths Association of North America (ABANA) curriculum to teach the basics of blacksmithing. ADK Wildlife Rehabilitation- September 2026

Advanced Sharpening and Honing Blades- April 2026

AFS Craft Sampler- August 2026
$555.00 – $645.00Price range: $555.00 through $645.00When is the last time you tried something for the first time? If you've wanted to try your hand at one of the many crafts offered at AFS but you couldn't decide what to try, this program is for you! This summer we are offering a four-day program for students ages 16+ that explores a new core craft each day including basketry, blacksmithing, weaving, and woodworking. Students will learn a new skill and create a new project every day! Please note: No a la carte registration for single day courses. Lodging and food is not provided.
Day 1: Double Bottomed Bushel Basket with Barbara Boughton This basket is ideal for a beginner or someone who would like to learn additional techniques. Students will weave a sturdy, functional basket beginning with a kicked-up twined base. In weaving up the sides, multiple weaving techniques will be introduced. Students are encouraged to work with the instructor to design their own basket, applying embellishment and color consideration. Hand-dyed materials will be available to weave into the baskets. The basket is finished with a pair of leather handle. Students will leave with an understanding of multiple weaving techniques, and a unique piece of work. Dimensions: approx. 10" diameter, 8" high.
Day 2: Forged Leaf Keychain with Arnie Barsky This class is ideal for the beginner blacksmith with little to no experience. We'll explore basic techniques first then move on to forging leaves to create a decorative leaf keychain. Long pants (no nylon clothing) and closed-toe shoes are required. Leather gloves, eye and ear protection are provided; you may wish to bring your own for fit and comfort
Day 3: Woven Napkins with Janet Gallant Let's reuse and save. In this class you will complete several cloth napkins. Make them all one color or create a collection using the yarn available in class. Don't be afraid to use the napkins and to wash and dry them. Janet's first woven napkin was created 15 years ago and still looks as good as new!
Day 4: Woodturning Pens with Frank Lagace In this beginner friendly class, you will learn the basics of wood lathe operation and safety while turning a piece of raw wood into a custom pen. Each student will leave with a beautiful, handcrafted pen and the knowledge to continue woodturning confidently on their own.Dates/Times

Basic Shaker Oval Boxes- April 2026
$270.00 – $320.00Price range: $270.00 through $320.00One of the most iconic items of Shaker woodworking, nesting oval boxes share elegance, simplicity and functionality equally. Using carefully prepared thin strips of wood each participant will carve the "swallowtails" or "fingers" on one end before soaking them in a hot water bath to soften for bending. Copper tacks are installed to hold the oval hoop together before top and bottom boards are fit and held by wooden pegs. Each student will construct 3 nesting oval boxes from cherry wood in this two-day workshop. This class is open to all experience levels, no woodworking experience required!

Birch Bark Bowls- August 2026

The instructor has gathered birch from her property for you, but will also cover the correct way to harvest it yourself. Block by Block: Lego Prints- July 2026
$10.00In this fun hands-on workshop, students will use flat LEGO pieces and LEGO dots to build their own printmaking blocks. We will roll ink onto our designs and press them onto paper or fabric to make our own one-of-a-kind artwork! This exciting process is inspired by traditional Adirondack crafts where people decorated their own fabrics, furniture and signs by using carved blocks, stencils and nature themed patterns. Block Printing with Natural Dyes- February 2026

Bloomy Rind Soft Cheeses- September 2026

The black walnut tree (Juglans nigra) is one of North America's most valuable and beautiful native trees. We will then learn how to temper and cut a turkey's wing feather into a fine writing tool that we can use with the velvety smooth walnut ink to create calligraphy (beautiful writing!). For the calligraphy classes we will use a chisel-shaped felt pen and learn two letter styles – Gothic, or blackletter, and the Foundational Hand, also using our black walnut ink. Other materials and uses will be demonstrated as well.

Carving a Shrinkpot- April 2026
$140.00 – $165.00Price range: $140.00 through $165.00Students will learn how to carve a shrinkpot, a type of wooden container traditionally made using hand tools and green woodworking techniques that utilizes the natural shrinking process as the wood dries. Freshly cut green wood is hollowed out and a dry wooden base is inserted into a groove carved within the hollowed section. As green wood dries it shrinks, creating a tight seal around the base.

Ceramic Wind Chimes and Ornaments- July 2026
$160.00 – $185.00Price range: $160.00 through $185.00In this class we will create a decorative arrangement of small pieces or wind bells of ceramic to be suspended from a frame or used as ornaments. Students will use basic handbuilding techniques to create their pieces. After a drying period of three weeks, on the second day students will learn how to decorate and glaze their piece. Dress to mess. This class is suited for students ages 8 – 14 w/a parent, and 15 and up on their own. Supplies include clay, tool sharing, glazing and firing. Forms made will have a drying period before firing, and then glazing. Students will need to return to pick up finished pieces or make shipping arrangements with AFS.
