Copper Embossing with Birch Frame- March 2026

Copper Ornaments- June 2026
$120.00 – $135.00Price range: $120.00 through $135.00This copper ornament class will allow you to make your choice of 2 of the 3 items advertised. The process will have you cutting out the pieces, forming and texturing on an anvil. You will also be using a small torch as part of the texturing process, and soldering. The maple leaf ornament will have a "glass drop" soldered into the center. The mushroom can be used to hold your jewelry, earrings, and rings. The cap can be lifted off to slide rings on the stem. The stem is epoxied to a piece of bluestone serving as the base. The fern is a wall ornament that can be hung or laid in a windowsill. The fern is 10 inches tall, the maple leaf is 5 inches by 5 inches and the mushroom is 5 inches tall.

Crafting an Adirondack Story- July 2026
$10.00In this session, we turn the woods into our personal theater as we take a nature based story and turn it into a theatrical experience. Each child will make their own costume/prop and choose their own character in the story, for the purpose of performing a play. This is a 100% child led creative experience where each participant gets to bring their imagination to life! It will involve art and working with paint, glue, glitter and other such items. So please dress for mess. At the end of the session our work together will culminate with a live performance for family and friends. Children will take their costume/prop home.

On the second day, the class will use planers to ensure that all boards are level and the same thickness. Students will then use a router to create a well and handles. Finally, the boards will be sanded.

Double-Bottomed Bushel Basket- March 2026
$160.00 – $185.00Price range: $160.00 through $185.00This basket is ideal for a beginner or someone who would like to learn additional techniques. Students will weave a sturdy, functional basket beginning with a kicked-up twined base. In weaving up the sides, multiple weaving techniques will be introduced. Students are encouraged to work with the instructor to design their own basket, applying embellishment and color consideration. Hand-dyed materials will be available to weave into the baskets. The basket is finished with a pair of leather handle. Students will leave with an understanding of multiple weaving techniques, and a unique piece of work. Dimensions: approx. 10? diameter, 8? high.

Drawing Timber Frame Plans- April 2026

This 2.5-day weekend course gives you the skills to draft your own timber frame plans by hand, using traditional methods that connect design directly to building. You'll start with the basics of drafting: tools, techniques, and conventions for creating clear, accurate plans. Then, you'll take your drawings off the page and practice the basic mortise and tenon joinery. This is an immersive class that blends drawing and some joinery practice. Expect guided lessons, demonstrations, and plenty of time both at the drafting board and using hand tools to cut the joinery. No prior experience is necessary for this course.

Electric Welding: Guillotine Tool- April 2026
$160.00 – $180.00Price range: $160.00 through $180.00Guillotine tools are handy for a variety of tasks. They enable the Smith to accurately butcher, fuller, forge and tenon stock. This helps with tasks like joinery, as well as isolating material when forging work like a knife tang, rivet or tenon. In this class the student will learn to use a MIG welder to make and use a useful guillotine tool that can be used in an anvil hardy hole or vise, as the student selects. A basic set of 3 dies including butchers (isolating material), tenon dies, and flat dies are included. Skills covered include learning to cut, grind, and case-harden dies, and to do simple MIG welds to fabricate an accurate tool. This tool uses readily available mild steel for the dies, so specialty dies can be easily and cheaply made when needed.

Exploring Mosaics- August 2026
$225.00 – $265.00Price range: $225.00 through $265.00What inspires you? Nearly anything can be depicted in mosaics – flowers, birds, numbers, a special word, or a favorite scene. Create small masterpieces while extending (or beginning) your knowledge of this medium, which has been used to make long-lasting artworks for thousands of years! In this class, you can make an imaginative house number on a waterproof backing board or a multi-colored mosaic image on luaun plywood (various shapes to choose from). Bring your idea or sketch along to this workshop, and capture your image in tile, stone and glass… to create a colorful artwork that will enhance your home for years to come. Beginner to experienced artists welcome! Students will utilize brightly colored glass tiles, stained glass, seashells and pebbles. (Bring a couple of permanent items to add to your project, if you'd like!) Kate has all the "tesserae", tools and expertise you'll need to shape your pieces and secure them to a background with mortar or glue, which will comprise our first day of work. Day two will be a shorter day, grouting and admiring your finished piece, which will be ready to take home! Artist Kate Hartley, who created the North Creek Mosaic Project Mural with over 2000 volunteers, will guide you in bringing your own vision into mosaic form. She's been teaching visual arts to people of all ages for four decades, and delights in encouraging individual expression in artists of all experience levels.

Forging a Chef's Knife- July 2026

The chef's knife is the most used knife in almost any home. These iconic knives help to create meals for family and loved ones. Well-made kitchen knives can last a lifetime and this class will give you the opportunity to create one of your very own. In this two-day class students will make their own chef's knife from high carbon steel. All aspects of bladesmithing will be covered, from forging the blade to shaping, then heat treating, grinding, and polishing, making and fitting a wooden handle and finally, sharpening – with very special attention given to the design and geometry of this kind of knife. This class is intended as an introductory bladesmithing class, but some forging experience is helpful.

Forging Square Head Dividers- May 2026
$320.00 – $360.00Price range: $320.00 through $360.00In this course each student will get a chance to forge their own set of dividers based on 18th century designs. These tools would have traditionally been used to trace and chart out patterns as well as calculate size or distance. This is a helpful tool for any traditional wood or metal worker and would be an excellent additional to any tool chest. This class will involve forge welding and hand filing. It is recommended that students taking this course have some basic working knowledge of blacksmithing (how to operate a forge, using hand tools, etc.). Prior forge welding experience is not required.

From Fleece to Yarn- November 2026
$385.00 – $460.00Price range: $385.00 through $460.00Wool is a versatile ecological material for knitting, felting, and weaving, but processing it can be a bit tricky for a beginner. In this workshop, you will learn how to work with wool starting with raw fleece straight off the sheep and ending with handspun yarn ready to be incorporated into your craft projects. If you have your own raw wool that you want to process or tools that you want to try out, please bring them! We will play with wool from a variety of sheep breeds, including some rare heritage breeds, and we?ll learn how to use their different qualities to create the perfect materials for your projects. You will learn how to use different wool processing tools like hand cards, wool combs, and a drum carder. If you like starting with natural materials and seeing them through to the finished product, this is a great workshop for you!

From Seed to Pizza- April 2026

In this immersive, seasonal program, you'll experience traditional farming and food-making skills step by step – right down to a fresh, handmade pizza created from your own flour. In April Instructor Martin Macica will introduce you to Annie, his gentle plow donkey, who will help us prepare a plot of land on the AFS campus for planting wheat seeds the old fashioned way. In May, Instructor Patricia Goldberg will teach you how to plant a pizza garden in raised beds, choosing herbs and vegetables that will later top your pizza. Return to the field in August with Martin to harvest your wheat and learn how to bundle and store it for drying. Finally, in September start your day with Martin, who will teach you how to thresh your wheat and grind it into flour. Then meet Instructor David Riihimaki, our pizza maker extraordinaire, who will guide you through mixing, kneading, and shaping your pizza dough from your freshly milled flour. Add your garden toppings, some local cheese and watch it bake in our wood-fired oven. Then enjoy your farm-to-table pizza feast together!

Fundamentals of Natural Dyeing- March 2026

We'll talk about fiber selection and preparation, dyeing techniques, and how to sustainably gather plant materials for natural dyeing. This is a great foundation for future natural dye classes. Beginners will get a strong foundation in the fundamentals of natural dyeing, while participants with some experience with dye will gain a deeper experience with local materials. Participants have the option to select quilting cotton, DK weight wool yarn, or cotton mending thread. No experience necessary.
